The Extreme sailing series comes to Cardiff ,some boats are allready here. I believe that Mermaid Quay will be closed to everyone else during the event ,does anyone know if any other restrictions are in place?

There's maintenance with the locks for during the next 2 weeks, so you can't lock in/out during the day and even though the scheduled training was from 4 to 7, there were being partrolled as soon as the extremes were out, 9:30 this morning !

Cheers

Link here to the Notice to mariners about lock closures. http://www.cardiffharbour.com/content.asp?nav=12,50&parent_directory_id=1&id=400&Language=

It looks as if motorboats with air draught less than 3.7 meters wont be affected but yachts over 3.7 m height will be restricted to lock 1 and that will be closed at certain times as well.

The way I interpretted that the exclusion dates did not cover the weekend so the locks are running normally - untill the 4th when it start again. Or did I get that wrong? I hope, we are coming over from Portishead on friday

It looks like the next closure will be on Tuesday if I am reading it right.

It looks like they have kept the weekends free, so will be open this weekend. Mermaid quay pontoons will be shut but the gravel yard is open with a small channel leading into the commercial side of the quay and branching off to the yard.

Watched them in action this afternoon.

We saw them briefly too.

I reckon I could beat them in Ishtar.

well, er, not, actually. :D

Very fast, and well worth going to see I'd say.

We've been watching them train over the last couple of days, hopefully going to actually see the racing this weekend.

It happened earlier this year, went to France and ended up in Lorient a week before the Volvo race came to town so saw them setting up the villiage, did the same in Cardiff yesterday !!

Wow! Just got back after a really good long weekend watching the races- and the harbour festival.
Fantastic viewing opportunities -we took well over a thousand snaps!- of some tremendous sights, particularly from the shore near the harbour authority building.
Navigation not too restricted, we ended up in the gravin dock visitors berth, staying overnight Saturday. Bit embarrassing at times as leisure sailors strayed out of the buoyed entrance channel, as indicated in the NtM, and into the race track, but lots of potential for watching from moored boats next time I believe.
Every opportunity for all parties to build on this worldwide exposure Cardiff has got from this, I bet it will be harder to get a good view next year!

Was the Gravel Yard full on Sat ? We were going to go over but headed out watched a couple of races then decided we could see more for the shore so went back to CBYC and walked over the barrage the the quay.

Visitors dock wasnt full by nightfall but constant movements throughout the day.
Good views from shore but anyone lucky enough to be on the water got some ral close ups.

We watched from several different places, including bobbing around on the boat. Personally I preferred being on shore as I spent too much time concentrating on keeping the boat in the right position and facing the right way.

It was mega to watch, and if the word gets out they'll have to construct some grandstands for next year.
