\"Extras\"

Looking at the prices of a new boat, which shall remain nameless Some of the charges for extras seem a bit over the top

2nd battery 70ah with bridge rectifier and battery switch £339

Electric bilge pump £369

Speed/log/temp. "Raymarine ST-60" for instrument console £710

VHF Aerial with windvane£121

Is it just me?

Sometimes these things are added by the commissioning engineers in the UK rather than in the factory and they have to remove trim and work on the otherwise completed yacht. The full installation of a second battery including materials sounds high but not necessarily extortionate to me at £339 given that labour would be between £30 and £41 per hour, plus VAT.

Re: \"Extras\"

To be fair, they're not meant to be sensibly priced. A widely used ploy is to offer the basic boat at a competitive price, then put many near-essential items on the extras list and charge high prices, so as to claw back some of the margin sacrificed on charging a special number (say 79,995) for the basic boat. The manufacturers bank on the fact that most new buyers cant be bothered to get these extras fitted by independent contracotrs/boatyards at 30% less than these prices, so they order them anyway.

I gotta say, we found the same ordering our boat. A crazy price for some extra deck areas covered in teak. But it's loads of hassle to get it done yourself (remove all the fittings, etc) for say 50% of that price, so you have to pay. I drew the line at an extra wardrobe shelf for £800 and made my own :).

I dont condemn the manufacturers. This is market forces in action and they gotta be allowed to do as they please. We're all free to shop elsewhere. Most of us are able to buy boats in the first place because we benefit from the same market forces/capitalism etc, so not fair to condemn manufacturers for doing likewise, imho :)
