Does anyone know if you can buy extra long kill cords? I've been searching the net but not found anything.
Yesterday we took our kids out on the new boat for the first time, and rather scarily the kill cord just came out at nearly 30 knots. We now know that it works extremely efficiently, but resulted in me being thrown from my seat and two rather shaken children. My husband had it attached correctly, but he is a very large man and says he thinks it is just too tight around his leg. He only moved slightly and it was pulled out.
He thinks a longer cord would solve the problem, and obviously we don't want it to happen again so need to find one ASAP.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

With a traditional kill cord, surely you can replace or extend the existing cord with any bit of string, thin webbing, etc? Or how about clipping it to a handy ring etc on his lifejacket rather than round his leg?

On a bit of a tangent, using the water taxi in Alderney on Thursday night I saw an interesting gadget that's new to me - a wireless remote (worn on a lanyard round the neck) which carried the engine starter button and also acts as a kill-cord. Very convenient security (the taxi driver just strolled down the road from the pub, got into the boat and pressed the button - but no way of nicking it while he was away) and also a kill cord that can't be forgotten and allows free movement around the boat.

Is it OK to do that Pete? I'm just so paranoid about the whole safety aspect. Or could maybe a local chandlers make something for us?

Well, all the kill cords I've seen (admittedly I'm a sailing boat person so we're talking small outboards on tenders, not big powerful RIBs) have just used the sort of curly plastic string that used to fasten my school locker key to my uniform trousers as a kid :). So we're not exactly talking high tech here.

If too long, would be ineffective & pointless.

You could easily link 2 together however.
