Is it possible to obtain the necessary fittings to temporarily extend the aerial wire into another vhf radio for use when the mast is down?

If the antenna is horizontal now, it (as said before) "won't work brilliantly" and extending the cable to it is just a wast of money and effort. The reason is, the VHF signal is polarised. That means, the receiving antenna has to be parallel with the transmitting one. We are, by agreement, using vertical polarisation. Your horizontal antenna, in an ideal word, wouldn't communicate at all with those vertical ones. But because nothing is perfect :-), some debris of the strongest signals would come through.
