Given the current spat of bad weather in the UK, I feel pretty bad about posting these, but if I cant share them on the forum, then where can I show them! We have decided to take an extended break in the Med and cruise our way around as much as we can starting from our home port of Alcudia in Majorca.

All fuelled up and ready to go, we are planning to stay out around 2-3 weeks, starting with the North coast, mainly because the weather was better.

We set off to a cracking day, except in my excitement I forgot to organise breakfast, so within a mile or so we were already anchored up.

Leaving Alcudia on a calm summers day..

..and even though I think its warm, Heather is taking no chances...

We remember we havent eaten about 3-4 miles out, so stopover in a bay called Cala Figuera, absolutely no one around at all.

After toast and tea, back off again, planning to stop over in Soller, the coastline is pretty dramatic around here, with only one stop over port on the whole north coast.

Here is the pretty cala de calobra from a distance, decided not to stop as weather was so good.

We got to Soller quite quickly running at a gentle 18knots, and went into the harbour for a peek. This is the entrance to Soller..

And then into the harbour

Decided we had plenty of time, so we would go onto the next stop, which was Port Andraitx on the West Coast.

Met a friendly pilot on the way that came right low over the top of the boat and even waved...this is teh best shot I could get as he went past

This is about halfway around pta del fabiole - basically a big bit that sticks out...

Then round the bend The island of Dragonera comes into view, a lot bigger than it looks on the map, and quite impressive.

The round the corner towards port Andraitx.

At this point I am sure I took loads of pics of the mooring and facilities, but some good fairy has lost them, so we go from this point, to setting off early next day to Ibiza - around 65 miles, I think the longest single stretch we have done so far in the boat.

Weather was ok, what they call marejadilla - a slight sea, but in fact once we got near Ibiza the winds picked up, and it became a bit more marejada rough) - the wind was howling, and we were into a head sea. I made the decision to go East coast rather than West, which was great once we got into the cover of the land. However once we got round teh headland at pt de la creu, the wind became really fierce, reminding me to make sure I tie down everything including cushions before we leave.

Anyway no pics, as we were hanging on for dear life, but the boat got us safely to San Antonio (in fact the boat was probably laughing at us given it never put a foot wrong, unlike us)

This is San Antonio harbour, no problems getting a berth, but they were new floating berths, so quite rocky.

You can see our berth here, including some dodgy electrical boxes..

Here is the Great Escape looking very happy in her temporary berth..

We only stayed one night (SWMBO didnt like the Showers!) and after a brief visit to another marina puerto santa eulalia by taxi, decided to take the trip round the other side of the island. They had very nice showers, and all in all it was a great place to stop.

This is coming back up the east coast

and finally round the corner down to santa Eulalia

Stayed here for 5 nights, great place, and used it as a jump point to go down to Formentera.and isle Espalmador.

This must be pretty boring at this point, so will sort out my photos for Formentera and put them on in the next couple of days. Formentera was a magic place, and really great beaches.

Currently putting this together from Palma, where we hope to move on tomorrow, subject to weather (which is pretty windy at present)

Martyn,

We arrive in Ibiza on Monday afternoon/evening and are a bit concerned about getting a berth. Our SWMBOs arrive on Wednesday and Thursday. Have you had any trouble getting a berth .... any recommendations for a Moody 44, 13.1m long, 4.1m beam.

We had intended to head for ibiza harbour and take our chances, but we are a bit concerned they will be full and/or mega expensive.

Is it worth heading round to St Eulalia or St Antonio, and maybe hiring a car to collect the girls?

Great pics, and very helpful

Great pics, Martyn. What was the town of San Antonio like? A bit lairy in the evenings, I guess? I've tried to book in St Eulalia for August but they say they don't operate a forward booking system (you have to ring at 09.00 on the day you want to go there and they put you on a waiting list). Did you find any marinas where you could book ahead?
Looking forward to the pics of Formentera and Espalmador. We really liked it there ourselves

Hi there Richard.
Ive never had a problem mooring or anchoring in San Antonio at this time of year, but then again we are only 10 metres. There are quite a few mooring bouys in the bay, last year they charged my pal 8 euros for 2 nights on one .Ibiza is very expensive & always seems full.Never been into Snt Eualia
Most of the time we anchor in the calas & use the dinghy to go ashore
Will be around from mon 25th to july 9th.
hope this helps ..Nat

Great trip report, look forward to the next lot! We encountered those planes as well - they pick up water from the sea and then drop it on forest fires etc

They were probably doing exercises like they do most days in PG - a really interesting sight! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Am seriously looking at boating over there, met engineer called scot in alcudia marina back of A1 yachting services, he told me there was loads of work there and aked me did I want a job doing some GM Detroits in a 70ft something or other.

Great post, has wetted my apetite even more now so if you can give any advice on moorings and north of Island boating please do by Pm, enjoy rest of your hols and keep us all posted.

Cheers for now VP.

volvopaul, I'm sure there's plenty of work in the Balearics for a competent English speaking engineer. You won't find moorings easy to find anywhere on the islands. It's a case of asking around or maybe going through a broker

Hi Paul

We use A1 - they look after ou boat for us, nice people, I can PM you the guys details if you want. Our service guy who looks after mine and medreamers engines may be retiring, so he also would be a good chap to talk to. Let me know if you want any names and numbers. Deleted User is right about moorings, Alcudia it is very difficult to get a long term mooring, Bonaire is much better, but just a bit further round. Pollensa requires membership of the club, starting price 20,000E so thats out unless you have the desire. Also San Pedro other side of Alcudia bay is a cracking little marina, fairly new, they had space last year after an update with new berths. Alcudia wins though, simply because so much is in walking distance, if you can get in there.

You can certainly look after our engines if you come out and we are still there!

Hi Richard

We met upwith a few guys who couldnt get moorings in Botafoch or any of the other marinas in Ibiza port. San Antonio have just put in new floating (read very bumpy and open to harbour) moorings with electricity and water for teh summer, so there was plenty of room when we were there. I think we paid 40e per night for 12m. I really liked st Eulaire - it had everything in one place, we stayed 5 nights in teh end at about 45e per night.

There was an issue with depth though, we were in a 12m mooring with a depth of 2m, some yachts were being turned away even though there was space. Mostly the yachts moored outside the harbour, although it was a bit bumpy some days with SW winds. We never got into Formentera port, so ended up mooring on a bouy which worked OK.

Currently the winds and sea state have been a bit rough (well to me anyway) around Mallorca, so we are hanging around Palma until around Tuesday.

Have a great trip and let me know if you come to Majorca?
Kind regards

Martyn

I hate you!!!!!!

I can't have a another boat for now and your piccies make me want one soooooo much. They bring back very happy memories. Hope you don't mind, but I've saved a couple of your piccies because most of mine are on video.

Last November, I actually went for a sea trial from Santa Ponsa on a very nice Sunseeker, but we didn't agree on a price. Subsequent events have overtaken me, so it's just as well. Maybe one day.

Thanks for that. I look forward to the ones of Formentera, although I have a few of my own from there.
