It has been idly suggested that a few South Coast s'butters might undertake a Cherbourg dash at some point in October. Plot: - go, get there, park, dine ashore, replenish stores from the offie, depart.

The idea, such as it is, would be to cram as many people as want to go onto as few boats as compatible with comfort, hygiene and personality disorders. Bunks could probably be found for non-southcoasters who wished to come and observe proper sailing.

So, who might be up for it?

Ken

I'm up for this with Amaya and could make 3 berths available, or 4 if any couples. I'd probably take a regular crew as other watchkeeper but this depends on the experience of any visitors.

Tom

I'd be up for this with Glen Rosa and could make 3 or 4 berths available depending on size. (ie Claysie + 2 or 4 non-Claysies)

Ken,

I would like to go too, preferably as a crew for somebody else, for the experience. If there is a shortage of boats, I would be happy to take Moondance (Moody346) with 3 others on board, but would need an experienced crew as I have yet to skipper a maiden voyage across the channel.

Hi Ken:

I really like the idea and count me in.

AOD is a racing boat and it's open plan with 8 berths but if I am on a jolly I would only really want to take 6 including a few I know I can rely on.

Re: non-claysie

i think my diary might be free for another culinary extravaganza, berp. But I am busy 10oct until end of the month.

Suggested menu:

breakfast : bacon sausages etc etc but not cauliflower,
lunch: Anything but cauliflower
dinner: No, get lost, not cauliflower. Oh alright, but i wd prefer to have a game of cricket with the thing.

Re: non-claysie

Sounds wonderful - Dear Heart is cultivating some Purple-Hearted Cauliflowers and I'm sure she'd be fine with me bringing some along to test.
Early in October is good for me as with TCM, I get quite busy after that. I'd just need a couple of weeks notice so that if I need the Friday I can organise my illness to coincide.
I assume I'll need waterproofs as Glen Rosa probably hasn't a patio - Hmm, now where did I put them.....?

Well, the Sunday is the 17th after Pentecost but I'm not sure if its anywhere near the venereal equinox.
Also - will it be a race or will we just cruise across with nobody bothered if someone eases ahead?

Re: racing strategy

nope, just a gentle cruise. Except that the first in will be triumphant about their clever navigation and bore everyone about lee-bowing, and the losers will have some equally boring story about choosing the wrong sail.

Best option is to do as the trasnatlantic racers do and pack it in when actually about 40 miles from port. Switch on the engine, rip the sails down and whack it as fast as poss. This makes all the others still with their sails up within sight of land look a bit amateurish and coastified.

Re: So, if we went handzup for 4/5th October

Could be a bit of a problem for me that weekend (SWMBO's birthday Friday), but you'll never get a date that suits all so go with the majority

would you "be happy" to taker yr boat or are you really very keen indeed and can't wait for the chance? If other boats are busily full, i can help, done it a few times, and fixed engines.

I also have a good idea about astral navigation -see those small twinkling ones up there, where I'm pointing, in a sort of frying pan shape - they're stars, they are :)

Re: So, if we went handzup for 4/5th October

Funnily enough, my SWMBO's birthday on the Friday too, so that is the only weekend I can't really make it.

Like tome, I suggest you go with the majority.

Re: non-claysie

erm, not sure that there is such a thing as a purple-hearted cauliflower, is there? Was it broccoli all along? Or (much more likelY) some very lumpy heather, perhaps bulked-up with some trodden-in sheep doings and sold off at the local farmers shop as a rare cauli? There's a sad-looking variety which if you cut it open will be orange and have a load of pips - that means it's melon-cauli! hah! melancholy! ok, i will go on the other boat...

Re: non-claysie

meloncholy is fine - I came across a whole load of them together in a field once and realised I'd discovered a melon colony - should I go on the other boat as well?

Yes I would very much like to take my boat, if somebody of your experience is coming with me. She is in good condition for her age (1989), and the previous owners went across several times. The engine hasn't missed a beat, or used a drop of oil all season (pause to touch wood rapidly).

The only downside is lack of radar, so if you are in the school that believes you can't go across without it, we should forget the idea now. I am going window-shopping at the boatshow but won't have anything sorted before the subject trip.

Having said that, I won't be disappointed to go on somebody else's boat either. It is the experience of going, one way or the other, which I am after.

We can talk about details closer to the time, once the date is agreed. On this matter, I will talk very nicely to SWMBO this evening, to test the water re 4th/5th - she might think the best birthday will be for me to be right out of the way !

Let's wait to see how it pans out.
