Exploding SUP

I've been told by the SUP Centre in Southampton if it says max 15psi inflate it to 10.

I have two, one welded (max 25psi) one glued (max 15psi)

I have constant issues with the glued one.

I'm going to try one more repair, but if it fails again I shall get another welded Red Ride.

blimey! that's crap...
bought a cheap one last month, went through an awful lot of trouble to assemble an adapter for the onboard air compressor to charge it.
Says 15, made sure I inflate it at 13 midday under the sun, so wont go higher!
Generally best to inflate them when really hot and a bit lower than recommended.
Bought this SUP Navigator for 210euro, thought at least if it's crap I wont have paid much
:) Turns out that some seasoned SUPers friends that came on the boat and tried it were enthusiastic about it, how stable, fast and straight it was moving...
Was also only 7kg for a 3mX.8m board. Maybe worth checking if you can get it locally?

The only way you are going to know the pressure in the sun is to measure it. I was testing some elelctronics this summer, and the top temperature was 80C and the bottom was 50C (not running). In the water the air temperature will be close to that of the water.

The other issue is the temperature range of the adhesive.

I go with very light colors for all inflatables. This reduces the temperature swing and the temperature the glue must endure.

Back in the 80's we took a very old Avon redstart (one of the black ones) to a boat jumble for a friend, Pumped it up the night before & put it on the roof of the van, in the morning it was pretty flacid so we pumped it up again.
It was a cloudy day & the Avon got more flacid every hour. Then the sun came out, It got nice & hard as it heated up & i sold it 5 minutes later! Sorry if it was you that bought it!

SUPs should not be left fully inflated in the sun. It's not just the absolute temperature that is the issue, but also the radiative heat from being in direct sunlight. Most manufacturers will actually say in the blurb that comes with the SUP not to leave it in direct sunlight and to reduce pressure when not in use. I am actually really surprised how many people leave them pumped up fully on their boats the whole time, this is asking for them to explode.

Even the minor expansion puts more pressure on the seams than they are designed for, thus weakening them and making it more susceptible to popping in the future. I'd go so far as to say if your SUP has survived being in the sun you've been lucky and it popping due to the sun is not a warranty issue as you have not cared for it properly.

I have had two pop. The first one was on deck about 10 years ago. The second was more of a surprise. It exploded like a bomb whilst tied alongside the boat in the water. Everybody in the anchorage was on deck wondering what had happened😆

My wife uses a SUP and we generally carry it sitting on top of the tender on its side tied to the davit. 2 days ago she complained the board was unsteady and when o checked the pressure it was only 4psi, instead of the recommended 15psi. I pumped to 15 and yesterday morning I checked it again. It was 14.2 and I pumped it to 15 again. This morning I'm on the boat on my own. After I dropped the anchor I was making a phone call when I heard a loud wailing, siren type noise followed by an almighty explosion. Guess what.
I previously had a different issue with this board, unrelated to pressure, and was refunded in full by the seller, so I have reason to question its overall quality.
I've ordered a new board today from Decathlon mainly because of the 10 year guarantee. The recommended pressure for the new board is also 15psi. Do others in the Med pump their boards to the max recommended or do they allow some leeway for the high afternoon temperatures? It was 40⁰ here for a couple of days last week which is unusual but we are still getting to 34⁰ in the late afternoon.

The same happened to ours,
I usually pump up up to 1.1,
the manufacturer was not interested in helping. Very disappointed.
