I note this comes with preloaded uk charts. Interested to here opinions of current users and very interested to learn of the mounting options.

Thanks

Hi Smeaks,

I fitted my Garmin 750 to the instrument pod of my Bavaria 30 this July:

Flush fitting was very easy, although as you see it was a tight fit next to the windlass control! It also comes with a bail mount, which would have been my plan B if it had proved too large for the pod.

It does come with preloaded UK charts, and these I've found very good. Visibility is also good in sunlight - although it did take me some time to find out how to adjust screen brightness (when will I learn to read the manual?)

Tide tables are included for primary and secondary ports, but tidal arrows etc are not. And to get the "bells and whistles" charts with 3D view, tidal streams, photographs and "auto plotting" you need to invest in the Garmin BlueChart G2 Vision map at another £200. Personally, I've not bothered.

I've found it very useful for passage planning, and although I was a little worried about the touchscreen and how it would operate in rain and spray, I've found no problems. And the large screen is a real improvement after my last (now discontinued) Garmin.

Brilliant kit. I've said it all before in other posts. First update of charts is now free ( even though mine was a couple of years old when I did it.)

Another satisfied owner of a 750. I have bought an extra bail and wiring and can have it mounted either at chart table or under spray hood. I did think long and hard about mounting it at the wheel and eventually decided against it. I have mine connected to a NASA AIS engine which works extremely well. I crossed the shipping lanes in the Channel heading South in June in thick fog and it was a godsend. Initial coverage and detail on the built in chart is very good. I did have to buy a new card with the chart for Southern Brittany for the summer. In fact covered the whole of Bay of Biscay. Cheapest charts I could find were from Marine Superstore in Port Solent. I don't know about ebay.

No connection etc etc.

I am having the same thought process about when I replace my current plotter - at the helm or under the sprayhood? SWMBO is keen not to clutter the helm area and suggests that when we are doing longer passages, which will largely be under autohelm/wind vane it would be more convenient to have the plotter under the sprayhood. If one of us is actaully helming then the chances are the other will be up and about and could look at the detail on the plotter. I suspect we will try it SWMBO's way and see how it suits.........

Great piece of kit.
The Homeport software is worth it for your computer too as you can transfer waypoints, tracks and routes from one machine to the other.
The tide arrows etc are available in the homeport software and are great for route planning in advance.
Ours is under the sprayhood and works well there.
