Hi

I'm not looking to start another x anchor versus y anchor thread, just looking for any experiences of using a Kobra anchor, preferably the 20Kg version - I am looking to buy one for my 40' yacht (around 12000Kg in cruising trim), which will be used as a warm water liveaboard. I anticipate using 60-80m all chain rode.

Many thanks

Neil

All Anchor threads start the same way like this one.

However, I am interested on comments on the Kobra, because I will be replacing my current anchor to either, Kobra, Delta or Manson Supreme.

We have been using a 16Kg Kobra on our 38 footer (9 tons) for the past 18 months. We liveaboard and rarely vist marinas in the summer so we anchor most days. It's a huge improvement on the old CQR. Nearly always sets first go and has only dragged twice - once when we didn't put out enough chain and the other time a bit of a mystery as when we moved a bit and dropped again, it held fine in 40K gusts (maybe just a bad patch). So, very happy with it but it doesn't look a lot different from the Deltas which are often cheaper.

Hi Neil - what did you buy eventually? Moody, Westerly???

We have the 16kg version on a SO34.2 used on the west coast for 6 yeaars and so far never a problem. Best holding was in Canna harbour in a NE force 7-8 (exposed to NE). checked every hour or so but never budged.

In a French test some 2/3 years ago it was voted the best value for money with excellent performance.

AFAIR, only Spade out-performed it (at twice the price).

Kobra, great design, sets quickly, sets well and turns in a tide change and cheap. One reason its cheap is because it uses fairly bog standard steel. I've seen bent shanks of Kobras on bow rollers in UK marinas. Basically you get what you pay for. If you are anchoring frequently, money should not be an issue and I'd be looking at a Spade or Supreme (the latter has an almost indestructible shank). Longer term I'd consider a Knox, but I'd like to hear some more user experience first.

What about the Mantus?

We changed from a 16kg Delta to a 20kg Kobra a couple of seasons ago on our 37' motor sailer. The Delta had always been very predictable and I had a lot of confidence in it. We haven't tested the Kobra in as many different situations yet, but I think it's better. As others have reported, it seems to set very quickly which is reassuring. Interestingly my new anchor came with a very slightly bent shank, courtesy of Plastimo. Not enough to concern me, but disappointing it wasn't 'perfect'. Notwithstanding that, I think it's a good anchor.

In the end we did buy a 20kg Kobra. It's not really been tested yet, but seems to set and hold well in the fairly benign conditions it has been used in. It brought up impressive quantities of Chichester mud when used a couple of weeks ago!
