Hi , back in January we purchased our 1st boat moored in Cyprus , since then due to Covid situ we haven't even been able to get into the country let alone go aboard . It is also likely to be a month or more before we can go and check her over . So given the engine wont have been turned over in circa 6 months ( connected to shore power so hope batteries are charged ) any handy hints or must do's before we turn the key ?

Many thanks Paul & Lisa ( newbies )

They are normally ok stood for this time .
At every arrival I check the fluids leaks , oil , coolant , diesel .
Look under them and around the pipeage should be dry .

Dip the oil .If gearboxes? Dip those as well ? Peek at the coolant levels .

Don,t know what state it was left or what engines we are talking about in what boat ( access ) or it’s service regime or any particular winterisation nuances that have been done ( like diesel bug prophylaxis) to comment any further ,

For example seacocks and fuel cocks ?

As with Portofino's comments.
My boat was regularly left for two months at a time when I worked abroad, and no problems resulted. I just used to turn the engines over a few times before letting them fire, to circulate the oil. - but don't know if this is absolutely necessary with modern units.

Hi , thanks for your reply , the engine is a Yanmar 380 hp diesel , shaft drive , due annual service in June and will prob need a serious antifouling as had a wee beard back in January , we weren't expecting to be exiled back then !
As i said we are new to this and were due a refresher course having done my Day skipper and power boat RYA courses donkeys years ago but that has had to be put on hold as was due to do this at our Marina in Cyprus , so a little green around the gills so to speak .

Quite able to do the leakage engine checks and fluids , but would need to research online the anode , seacocks and fuel cocks scenario , but always glad of any help from 'The horses mouth ' so to speak ,

Regards Paul and Lisa
