Exhaust mixers and cleaning with fire

I've just been reading the exhaust thread and wondered if heating a blocked elbow cherry red or above in a forge/fire or with oxy would burn out the carbon deposits without the damage mechanical gouging causes and solvents seem ineffective.

Anybody tried it? If not, anybody got a scrap one (and a fire pit or gas axe) to experiment on?

(I really must stop this and go to work...)

Have you tried caustic soda? Works a treat on bike exhausts.
The readily-available stuff is limited to 12% concentration. Stronger can be obtained from chemists.
