The box that sits above the exhaust manifold (long box where raw water is injected after exiting the heat exchanger) is moving slightly. I see that there's only a piece of stud, with two bolts welded either end holding it rigid. The stud flexes and allows some movement. The other engine has a thicker piece of steel held with two bolts either end. That one is braced solid to the engine.

Because of this movement I see that the joint between the manifold and the aforementioned box is showing movement. When revving the engine above normal cruising speed there is a small puff of exhaust smoke at this junction.

For a true repair I need to make the box rigid properly with a similar brace to the other. I'll then replace the gasket properly.

For a temporary repair would some silicone gasket sealant squirted into the edge then wrapped in silicone self amalgamating tape suffice? That tape is sufficient for up to 260degC. I've not seen temperatures higher than that there.

I think you stand a better chance if you loosen the bolts and squirt silicone into the gap before tightening it again.

Thanks. I tried but both nuts have seized on the studs. By the look of them they've not been moved for a while! I need some Plusgas soaking on it.

I've smeared as much silicone gasket sealant on it as I can. I'll wrap some silicone tape around it and see how I go. But I think I should remove the lot and do a proper job sooner rather than later!
 
Yes the fumes are silent but deadly

There's only a very small puff of smoke coming out of the exhaust. Plus as far as I understand it as long as a diesel is running well (e.g. plenty of air and not smoky) there's a complete combustion of the fuel and consequently only a very low percentage of carbon monoxide in the exhaust fumes.

The boat does have two CO monitors in the cabin and wheelhouse.
