Hi All,

I have a beta diesel engine, after a 20 min run back to the mooring yesterday my 6 year old son commented on how smelly it was down below, when checking I had rather a lot of exhaust fumes making their way into the cock pit. It's a wet exhaust pumping well, there doesn't appear to be any water leaks in the system. Rather worrying with family on board. Anything I should be looking for in particular?

Thanks Gareth

When this happened to me it was a hole rubbed in the bottom of the plastic water trap. If exhaust is escaping below then water probably will be as well; that could be easier to spot.

Any holes in the wet exhaust system generally spout prodigious amounts of water but it is worth a check for any chafe on the flexible piping and elbow etc. Look out for dribbles.

Certainly wants sorting. For interest, did you have a following wind?

Wind was over the beam, so it wasn't that.

I haven't noticed any leaks in the wet system, although we were up against the tide getting to dry land yesterday (drying mooring)

Other than finding the cause, I will be buying and fitting a carbon monoxide detector before the next trip out. I don't know why an earth I haven't fitted one yet.

A failed exhaust elbow? ... they generally crack ABOVE the water injection.

Doubt if you would get THAT much CO from a diesel ..... although plenty of other nasties. However most certainly fit a CO detector .... and one at home as well!
