In the process of cleaning up the exhaust manifold on our 3gm30, I found some light coloured deposits in the fittings. Not difficult to scrape away, but out of curiosity I popped the offending fittings into a container of hot water & vinegar. Instant frothing, confirming the presence of carbonate deposits. Did the same to the thermostat and it's housing. Also frothing vigorously!
Once the bubbling stopped all the parts were squeaky clean. Just washed off in fresh water..

Once I get the parts returned to the engine I think I'll run the engine on a closed loop for a while (to /from large bucket!) with a substantial dose of vinegar, and observe the state of the discharge. I anticipate a fair bit of effervescence...
With a raw water cooled engine there are few other very simple & inexpensive ways of doing this.
It looks an effective clean out treatment, though a bit old school :)
Fresh water cooled engines don't really need to worry about this, other than at exhaust manifolds, since there are inhibitors in coolant additives.
