Have you come across someone who has a given some strange excuse not to go out sailing that day.
I must admit when we are in no rush I have used

Free fast wi-fi and I need to sort some stuff out
Winds in the wrong direction
Drunk to much at our leaving party last night
Fell through the pontoon.

have you come across any?

I was going sailing today, but my dear wife decided to break her hip yesterday, so I've visited the hospital instead. Is that a strange excuse?

Grrrr...

We once sailed with another boat to Brighton with a view to going on to Cherbourg. Two roughly similar boats, ours a Sadler 29 and the other a Trapper 501. We woke for the forecast at 6.30 and heard that it was going to be NE 6-7, ie coming off the land, so we got ready to leave, while my friend next-door poked his head up and said "my Autohelm is on the blink, so I think I'll stay and try to mend it". We set off with a scrap of sail and had to increase it, until even the spinnaker wasn't enough. At lunchtime Royal Sovereign was reporting NE7 from 50 miles away while we were motoring in a flat calm.

Surely the candle test is the most reliable?
You light a candle in the cockpit. If it goes out, there's too much wind to go sailing. If it doesn't go out, there's not enough wind. Works every time.
