I am thinking of buying a Motor Boat which has a Volvo 150 hp Diesel.
The boat is 20 years old. Although I see adverts for complete Mercruiser Engines is there anyone who sells "Exchange" or Complete Volvo Engines as I dont mind buying a 20 year old GRP hull but I dont want to go thrashing round the Irish Sea with a single engined boat where the engine hours are unknown and the service history is incomplete, where for a few (?) thousand pounds I could put a 2011 engine in it.

before you condemn the volvo why not give a chance and run it close to home for a few hours?? our fords are a lot older than yours and we have no qualms re reliability.

.
Which model Jim?
I just sold my 27 year old boat with its origional engine (105hp Volvo TAMD30)
Over the years I had to do various repairs and replacements to it
Whipped it out to replace a crank seal and renew the eng mounts
Replaced the starter motor and alternator.
Stuck a new fresh water pump on it
Replaced the heat exchanger with a good used one from Coastal Rides
In fact had quite a few bits from them
So over the 12 years ownership, probably spent 3/4 K on it
At least I 'knew' the lump!!
I toyed with a new/secondhand or recon a few times
It always seemed to much dosh!:(
However
The new owner says She is going great and has been playing about in Said 'Irish Sea':)

Can't see anything wrong there. Volvo can't build quality in laboratory conditions!
It's the engineer not the surroundings that are important.
But then I'm a very happy customer!

#1 Make no mistake Volvo are a world class engine manufacturer.

#2 Engineers do not build engines, with a following wind they are at best technicians.

#3 You cannot perform quaility rebuild of a diesel engine in a pig hole.

#4 Seen far better engine test facilities in Bosnia.

Little story, I purchased a container load of marine engines of various make from a oil exploration company all unseen. When they arrived all the engines were in a complete mess and pretty much worthless, I was told to contact these guys. I was amazed when they came and paid good money every single one of the Green junk.

Seems like people here more concerned about a bargain, than quality, different in Europe and U.S.
