In 2019 after receiving a recommendation from a friend who told me he had bought a reasonable headsail from Exchange Sails. I purchased two sails a Genoa and a Mainsail, which were said to be the best of their used sail stock, both rated 9 on their scale of 1 to 10 which suited my boat.
What I received were two sails that were dirty, stretched and baggy and I would have been ashamed to be seen putting in a skip let alone on my boat. A skip is probably where they got them from.
In addition they were not to the dimensions described, the old sail numbers were still on both plus the new sail number on the main were incorrect.
Unsurprisingly I contacted Exchange Sails by phone and spoke to the owner John and as the sails were not as described or in a reasonable condition, asked for a full refund which was agreed without argument.
I returned the sails by TNT and waited for the refund to arrive.
After 2 weeks I contacted Exchange Sails by phone and asked why I had not received my refund to be told by Kate that they sent refunds at the end of each month and I would receive my full refund at the start of the next month.
When this didn’t happen I again phoned to receive an apology and assurance that the refund would be made next month. As I was unhappy with this, they agreed to try to send it sooner.
Over the next months I received no refund but a variety of excuses from Kate, as John was never available, ranging from its the bank’s fault to we are waiting payment of a large order, we’ll send you part of the refund when we get that. It seems they live from hand to mouth and desperate for any money in anyway they can get it?
As time went on my patience totally ran out and I was forced to resorted to the small claims court which I found was an easy process and I was awarded an additional amount for costs.
I then put the issue in the hands of a debt collector, 2020 was the year of COVID and this allowed for things to drag on with travel restrictions etc.
This was of course exasperated by Exchange Sails giving them the run around with I believe various delaying tactics, eventually not answering their phone calls or emails.
After nearly a year I finally agreed to take the next step of paying for an asset declaration which eventually produced the debt being paid in two parts to the Bailiffs.
It was not a great deal of money but I hate anything being stolen from me so I was not prepared to let this debt go.
It has taken the best part of 3 years and a deal of hassle to get my money back from Exchange Sails, they certainly did whatever they could to keep my money.
Since the start of my experience I have heard of others being subjected to similar treatment from Exchange Sails even to the extent of sails never being delivered, sails cut or badly patched to name a couple of examples but this is hearsay so I cannot vouch for these stories being true.
I am publishing this story as it is true and a warning to anyone who considers dealing in any way with Exchange Sails.

Sorry to hear of your troubles but they will come as no surprise to most people on here. There have been numerous threads about this company, all depressingly similar. At least this can be a fresh warning for newer members.

I googled them and they seem to do a good job of cleaning up their web image except for threads here on YBW of which there are several. Always worth a google before dealing with any traders.

Well done for your persistence & not letting the b@st@rds get away with it. Incredible that they’re still “trading”
I was a victim several years ago & as I wrote on a thread here a while ago, after a couple of months of constant lies and excuses I eventually received a semi-usable wreck of a headsail which had been sold to me as being in “very good condition”
These people truly are scum.

Same company that I dropped a load of sails off with for them to sell and that's the last I've seen or heard of them. I've written of this before and the company actually came on here complaining about the bad press they were receiving. We had a conversation but IIRC it involved offering me a discount on sails that I didn't want to buy anyway.

Lucky escape for me then, I had been looking at their site for a replacement main for my last boat!
Legally it's clear cut of course, anything that's sold online has a 14 day cooling off period (less return postage though) for exactly that reason.
Things like disagreements over condition and what counts as "good" is bound to happen with anything involving used goods sold online, but there's no excuse for such terrible service as described here...
Sounds like they are in financial trouble, and deserve it

Did you pay by credit card? If you had and it was between £100 and £30,000 you could have claimed your money back from the credit card company under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

Always, always pay by CC and you are covered for the full amount even if you only paid a small amount as a deposit.

Very good advice.

I bought a spinnaker from them 3-4 years ago, and it was better than expected, precisely as described. It arrived in good time, and judging by that 'buying experience', I'd be happy to deal with them again.

Strangely you are not covered if you use a credit card via PayPal, do use your card direct for full cover of this part of the law.

And to add to the previous post - assuming it's the same operation (and it looks very likely that it is) the ltd company "westaway sails centre"
Same address, same owner,
Last filed accounts in 2017 and was dissolved in 2019.

Still trading as Westaway Sails, but using the Company registration number 11823313 , Twist Lock Sales Ltd (seems appropriately named), same owner for both, "Kate" mentioned in OP is the wife. Incorporated just as WESTAWAY SAILS CENTRE LTD was dissolved.

So... after the windup of one company and the incorporation of another,

Supposing they still have John Morris' sails, would they owe him anything if they sold one?

You’d be a brave man to do so
In previous threads there were a couple of reported experiences like yours but they were by far the minority.

I had a similar experience with them in the past. Had a hell of a job getting my money back, I just don't understand how they are still trading.
