My boat runs a Yanmar 6lpa dte engine.
I noticed today that it was smoking a fair bit. Not a weird colour, just the normal light/dark grey diesel smoke. I don’t look behind that often except when fully under way and checking for hydrofoils etc creeping up behind me.
It’s maybe that I’ve just not noticed or because air temp was slightly cooler it showed more ??
Any thoughts on this.?
Engine running fine, oil pressure and temp all normal.

I’m wondering, I had extra weight on board in the form of two extra bodies than normal . Could this cause the exhaust port to sit lower in the water and create a build up of smoke that’s then released ?

Yes colder air will increase steam from your exhaust, however, it could also indicate water in the fuel? when loaded, what rpm can you pull at WOT?

3400 rpm
Quoted top is 3600. But it’s been 3400 for a while
Pulling 3400 is not great you are overloading the engine it should pull 3600~3700rpm when fully loaded.
What year is your boat, LP-DTE started coming in from 1998 to approx 2001 ish?
Do you run at WOT all the time?
Have you checked you fuel tank recently.
have your fuel filters turned black?
Please let me know
Cheers

I generally run at 3000rpm cruising around 17/18 knots . My fuel tanks were cleaned and polished last year.
It’s a 2006 engine 570 hrs. Runs nice, I think I just haven’t noticed the smoke before. I know all diesels smoke, and my van certainly does.

when engines are running correctly they should only emit steam on the water.

Have you just had an oil change?

What i ment there should be no smoke when cruising

I asked about the oil changes because 6LP's will smoke when over filled.
