Credit where its due.

My AIS engine started playing up a couple of weeks ago then completely died - just a week over 1 year old! Emailed NASA who said send it back and we'll fix it - normal repair charges would be around £25.

Their repaired it free of charge and had it back to me inside a week; only cost to me was the poatsge. Can't say fairer than that!

Cheers,

Jerry

But why did it start playing up? Did you find out what was wrong with it?

It's Good that NASA fixed for the cost of postage - but what was at fault to start with? Was it something that should've been picked up by their quality control but missed?

I have it connected to my Raymarine E series plotter which shows an AIS icon - green when AIS is on and grey with across through it when there is no AIS. This would intermittently go to the "no AIS" display then come back. The last time it did it, it never came back.

The repair note said that they had replaced the oscillator. It is now better than new - when new, it would take quite a few seconds for the AIS icon to show that it was receiving info, now it is instant!

Cheers,

Jerry

Recently I sent a Gps Repeater to them which had an intermittent fault.I received an Engineers Report saying that the unit was fully tested and no fault was found but they"replaced software of unit to current version".At the bottom where it says Credit Card required it was marked PAID.I was about to post a congratulatory tome such as yours when I received a £22.32 bill!

I suppose that....

...their AIS machines are proving so popular that they need to maintain their reliability perception profile (reputation?)

A very useful bit of kit, it seems to me.

Is it easy to connect the NASA engine to Raymarine ? (I now have a C series and intend to get an AIS engine - having used the AIS radar in the past)

My experience of NASA is also good. When my four year old Duet failed they promptly fixed it for £14. Most suppliers these days would charge you that much for postage!

Simrad, whose tiller pilot failed after 6 outings over a couple of years wanted to sell me a new one so I had to (sucessfully) sue the supplier. BTW I suspect it was the Simrad shorting out (because it rained would you believe!) that caused the NASA unit to fail in the first place. On NASA advice I have now installed a quick blow fuse on the Duet and on my own initiative have installed quick blow fuses on everything else.

[/ QUOTE ]What! You allowed a sealed, cockpit mounted, marine instrument to get WET! What do you expect?

I also had excellent service from NASA. I carried in an echo sounder which they fixed FOC, showed me their service facilities, and gave me lots of useful info about testing echo sounders. Very nice people.
