As I am often critical of customer service in the boating industry, I thought it appropriate to recognize two companies who should be an example to all!
Similar situation to Jimmy the Builder’s post, we left for the Yarmouth Christmas festivities on Friday the 12th out of Sparkes. As I brought the boat up to planing speed, my port engine failed to open up and I could not get it past 1500 RPM. As the port engine was sick, it de-rated the starboard engine so best I could do was 10 knots. As I didn’t fancy a 3 hour trip to Yarmouth arriving in the dark, I called Motortech to see if they could help. They were really helpful! As I floated around at West pole, we talked through the various potential issues with the EVC, fuel, debris intake, etc and finally they said they were sure it was a booster sensor. In the course of our discussion, I managed to get the RPM up to around 2500 on both engines and they said that if I could get to Yarmouth, they could get the part to Harold Hayles by Saturday who would then make the repair.
So with the aid of our able escort, Mr. Rat, we proceeded to Yarmouth...albeit at non-Rat speed!
On Saturday, the Royal Mail struck again and the part never showed up at Hayles. Once again, we got great service. Colin and Mark from Hayles, working with the Motortech guys, went above and beyond. They found another part, got it to the ferry in Lymington and then they met the ferry in Yarmouth to pick up the part. Mark then came over to the boat late Saturday and made the repair.
Glad to say the boat ran beautifully back to Sparkes on Sunday.
Again, my thanks to Motortech and HH for the great service.
By the way, anyone with newer D-6’s should be aware that these booster sensors are a known problem. I plan to get a spare to have on board.
Happy, or as we would say, Merry Christmas to all!!
