Hi all, just a word of caution to anyone contemplating using EvoStik as I did recently to fit new Formica surfaces to the galley, the tins they are now using have a plastic insert in the top from which one pulls a pouring spout. I bought two tins from different sources and both were half empty. There was a faint smell of solvent from the top before opening, and my theory is that the new tops are allowing the solvent to evaporate, thus reducing and thickening the glue.

I contacted the makers but they didn't want to know, which is very poor in my view, as this stuff ain't cheap.

If doing any similar work in future I will definitely be looking for an alternative.

Haven't they recently changed the formula to low vapour to stop the kids sniffing it (green band around the tin?). Bought a small tub from B&Q and it didn't set. Went to our local hardware store and bought the proper stuff in the old style tin, perfect, lesson learnt.

You all probably know, but be very careful when using in enclosed spaces, one of my old work colleagues blew up his kitchen when lighting a gas ring after using Evostick. He was sticking down Formica work tops.

Sniffing solvents seems to be a peculiarly Anglo-Saxon thing. Odd.

I just used some of the solvent free evostick to glue some formica to wood, what a load of crap! give me the old 'extra toxic' stuff any day, it's more like copydex now.
I won't be buying it again.

Hi Mark, yes the glue is still fine, the original type anyway. Obviously the newer fume- free is getting a slating, about as good as lead-free solder it seems. The new tins are the problem, I did contact Evode twice by email but was just fobbed off. Not good enough.

Cheers

Hi Sparkie,

Bit of thread-drift, but can I ask you where you got your formica from? I need to replace some of mine which got a little singed a while back. Its seperated from the rest so match is not too important.

Hello Jerry, bought the Formica from one of my local DIY shops in Chester. It nowadays only stocks white and black, but there is a still a good range available to order. Like most things these days it ain't a patch on the old stuff, the quality is nothing like as good. For stockists locally to you I think there is a Formica website, but it's a while since I used it. I've looked for alternatives but not been able to find one, as most stuff is pre-laminated these days.

Good luck

Hi Sparkie,

Thanks for that. I'll have to do some leg-work - probably literally! The stuff I have has lasted nearly 30 years and most is still fine apart from the bit I messed up (SWMBO not too happy!). Hope I can find something suitable.
