Can you still get spares for the below engine? (Johnson gone bust haven't they?)

Anyone know a web site for old engines (1980's) such as the above, so I can learn a bit more about them (only used to 5hp and below so far) ?

What does VRO stand for?

Is the evinrude 40hp vro 1986 a good engine? What sort of price should they be going for 2nd hand if in satisfactory working order, but not mint?

Anything to pay particular attention to when viewing a potential buy?

Thanks

Variable ratio oiler ....catchy eh?

I'd want to pay very little for such an engine (£200 if it seems to work really well, maybe not even that much). although I'll admit that old engines seem to go for more than they're really worth.

http://www.brokeboats.com/usedboats.html

http://www.maxrules.com/

might be useful, or do a google search for evinrude site:uk to find someone selling manuals.

Personally, if I was going to buy an old banger, I'd stick with the japanese makers.

btw, a lot of people recommend removing the "vro" and yusing pre-mix, seems it doesn't always deliver enough oil : does that tell you anything about the design/build quality?
