The Pull Cord on an Evinrude 4hp outboard has snapped. Is it an easy job to replace it or should I have a professional do it.
Thankyou in advance

Shouldn't be a difficult job, PBO had an articel on giving your outboard a serive and that included checking the pull cord, buy some new cord, dynema would be tough enough and then you need to attach it when the spring is fully unwound so that it pulls the cord back in, you then just need to reconnect the pull cord assembly.

On most recoil starters just remove the recoil assembly, usually 3/4 bolts on the top. If the cord has snapped it should have unwound all tension on the spring but in any event DO NOT dismantle the spring unless you are a monkey 'cos it'll need all four sets of fingers to coil it all back into the housing.

Remove the centre screw to remove the cover plate underneath exposing the cord drum, remove the old cord although normally they break close to the finger pull where it is fed through the hole in the recoil stop tube and as so much cord is usually wound onto the drum all you might need to do is re-attach the end still leaving plenty of good cord. Either way, either knot and feed through a new cord and knot onto the finger pull or re-knot the old one through the finger pull.

Manually wind the cord around the drum AFTER fitting the finger pull, pull out about one turn and, holding the drum so it cannot recoil, wind this cord back around the drum. Check that this provides enough pre-tension to hold the finger pull against the stop tube, if not, repeat this move. When it has enough tension, replace the bottom plate and screw and replace the recoil unit.

Check that you can pull out the whole length of cord, if ok - "job's a good'un."
