I need to change the impeller on a 9.9 Evinrude.2/. Is it difficult to do. Can I download the instructions, I am competent with ordinary repairs, but I have never had or seen the bottom of an outboard off. And to save lifting it off the boat, can I put the boat on a slipway, wait for the tide to go out and do the job with the engine still on the transom.

Impeller change

I assume it is much like my old 6HP. I wou8ld strongly recommend removing the motor to your workshop.
The first step is to remove the 4 bolts that bolton the bottom end. 3/8 AF I think. Do no force the bolts they will snap off like cheese and may well have the stainless steel bolt grown into the alumininium leg. Heat and all that stuff may help.
Once the bolts are out the bottom end can be pulled away by about 1cm. The gear shift must be disconnected. This is done by pulling the gear lever to the position where it pushes the rod down but also by putting the lever in the position where the gear box rod is pulled up. tricky it enables the 2 sections to be parted with the gear linkage connected. You will need a screw driver or 3/8 socket 1/4 drive to fit in and remove the clamp screw which holds the 2 rod sections together. From there you pull the castings apart but you may have to rotate the engine to a point where a roll pin will clear and allow the spline to part at the engine.
When it is apart you will notice the tube from the engine fits into a rubber tube on the pump housing which is now exposed. 4 bolts and the pump comes apart. There is a lot be said for buying a pump kit which replaces the housing and the outlet tube face plate and impeller.
Putting it all back together is tedious. You have to align the water tube and the gear linkage plus get the spline to start into the crankshaft. Then get it back to within 1cm so the clkamp for the gear shift can be refitted. I generally do all this with the engine upside down on the floor.
once you have mastered this procedure you will have conquered 80% of all the Evinrude woes. Put grease on the bolts. So give it a go. good luck olewill

I know of no on line instructions.

You dont give the year or the model number! So what follows may not be entirely correct

I would not like to do it while the engine is still on the boat. But provided you can tilt the engine fully It should be possible.

The whole unit complete with drive shaft should come away BUT after separating the geacase by a small amount you will have to disconnect the joint between the upper and lower parts of the gear shift rod. The water tube should remain attached to the engine but care will be need to ensure it is correctly located in the water pump on reassembly.

Once separated the water pump should unbolt from the top of the gearcase and slide off up the drive shaft. Watch out for the impeller drive key as you remove the impeller

(As far as I can see the drive shaft is not retained in the gear case so it will pull out but you don't need to pull it out unless you are also planning to replace the seals )

Lightly grease the splines on the drive shaft on reassembly

The impeller should be available on its own but a water pump overhaul kit should also be available if there is any wear to the cup etc.

Go to the parts catalog at http://shop.evinrude.com/ locate you engine by make, hp, year and model number and you will be able to access exploded diagrams. The water pump is on the gearcase diagram. No substitute for a manual but often useful.

Willsmarine in Kingsbridge and Oakley Marine in Brighton are both good for mail order parts
