I've just acquired an old (not sure yet, but probably 70's) Evinrude 4 (2 cylinder)
More for fun than anything else (I love tinkering with small outboards)
It looks ok, got spark and compression anyway.
Covered in oil. Carb totally blocked up with thick oil (as the petrol evaporated over the years)

Anyone know where to get a manual or got an electronic download version they don't mind sharing?
I'm just going to have a look at ebay to see if there is a pdf version and have a look on Google first of course.

And I can't find an anode on the engine either?! Not like my nice mint mariner (5 years old 2.5hp and like new - because I like to look after the beaut)
cheers.

I got a CLYMER shop manual for my 4 hp "yacht twin" from west marine some time a go. It covers Evinrude/Johnsom 1.5 to 125 hp 1956-1972. I only have a paper copy and its over 380 pages so would take some time to scan.

Thanks for the reply.

I have found some cd versions for a few squid on ebay and the local library have got a few real copies too (but I'm so good at forgetting to return library books I'm sure I'll buy a cd)
Cheers

As regard to the carb full of oil, that will be the old evaporated fuel/oil mix.
Remove any gaskets and o rings, seals etc, then put the striped down carb into a pot of water and boil it for a couple hours, that will remove all the varnish residue and clean all the jets, orifaces, etc.
The crank top bearing and seal were prone to wear on these, as with most 2stks.
Seloc do a manual for Johnson/Evinrude, 1971-1989, 1 1/4 - 60hp 1&2 cyl 2stk models, No is ( 008-x ) 1302.
The problem with their manuals is the pics are poor quality, and too many models covered, not enough detail.
I noticed one of those engines leying out at the local refuse tip last week.

Hi
There are two ranges of manuals the Clymer ones and the Seloc ones. The Seloc ones are I think marginally better. Try looking in Amazon but make sure you are sure of the years and models covered. There are no on line manuals as far as I know and am pretty certain of that. I have never heard anything good said about the CDs either.

You should be able to identify the year from the model number, which should be on a plate on the mounting bracket and also stamped on a core plug on the engine from this site Sometimes the hp and the year are fairly obvious but sometimes not as the numbering systems have changed over the years.

The iBoats forums are an excellent place to go for help with outboard problems. There are separate boards for the different makes. If you ask for any advice on there or on here for that matter be sure to quote the full model details including power, year and/or model number.

Once you have got the model number and the year the engine parts diagrams on the BRP website can be very useful. Sometimes with older models the exact model number may not be listed. If it is not then pick the nearest looking one as they mostly link to the same diagrams any way. Useful for looking up part numbers. Not working today though!

Be very thorough with the carb cleaning especially of the jet(s) and small passages. Be careful not to lose any small bits. The engine diagrams will help to ID all the bits and hopefully you will be able to get a carb overhaul kit. others have found Willsmarine good for parts by mailorder.

While you are working on it it will be worth replacing the water pump impeller. If you do that and have trouble getting a good water flow from the "pee hole"(or still get no flow) you should direct you attention first at the grommet at the top of the water tube and at the water passages in the head if it still overheats.

Just a few ideas based on experience with a small Evinrude that may be helpful.

I purchased a CD manual for my suzuki from a guy in Leeds from EBay. It was scaned from a paper manual and the scan quality was not very good.

Thanks for that and the links.

I'll get a proper manual as well - I have a paper manual for a yamaha and mariner I have and they have proved invaluable.

Having a laptop around would be a problem I guess, especially if the manual on the cd was naff too.
Cheers
