If you are interested in physiology, altitude climbing, and how to go about things in a sensible way, read this book

Pugh was the physiologist who figured out that the climbers needed both oxygen and fluids at altitude to slow their deterioration within the "death zone". He also looked at tents, boots, clothing, camp hygeine etc, ie attention to detail.

He certainly was written out of the history books, for various reasons. If you are interested in sports science/history of, then this is gripping stuff.

Sorry i know this is a sailing forum ;-)

Highly recommended; we went to a lecture by the author (Pugh's daughter) and immediately went to Waterstones to buy the book. Although mainly focussed on altitude concerns, much of his research has resulted in modern practices in a variety of outdoor pursuits and athletic matters, including, for example, modern clothing.
