Oh Dear me /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif swmbo demanded all invoices for the work that I have had carried out on the new boat as well as all the gadgets and ods and ends I bought for it, seems I may have got a bit carried away, but it does look nice /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

She has been sitting with a spread sheet going through all the paperwork, I think I may have gone a bit mad on all the gadgets for a boat we are only keeping for the winter to practice on. It's all gone deadly quiet, so I'm keeping out of the way for a bit, there may be some questions about coffee vending machines, anemometers, AIS, Navtex, overlaying radar, remote control lights, battery boosters, dehumidifiers, beers cellar, humidor, hoover, boat jet wash, patio heater, plants, new cutlery, new bedding, boat phone, low level lighting, Cockpit electric grill, party rope lights, electronic trim tab sensors, generator cover to match the canvas, digital TV and the like winging it's way over, not to mention the restaurant and bar bills whilst project managing the refit. I think it was having a chandlery superstore within 100yds of me for 2 weeks that was the problem /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Just out of interest, what is the average overspend when buying a boat, I want some hard facts to show her e.g. 10%, 20% of total cost ?

I don't think she will let me buy an old second hand boat again /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Or leave me with a cheque book to sort it whilst she suns herself in the South of France /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'm not going to even mention NHS, with Accenture pulling out, and one of main software writers in debt and being investigated. GC1 could quite happily point at this project, and mention that little overspend a great deal better result, though his swmbo would be at the spreadsheet for some months doing the comparison, though maybe it's time someone did get a spreadsheet and do it accurately, and she may be able to pay for GC1's overspend with the consultancy fees

attack, best form of defence?

Perhaps he could say that he would have liked to attend a course of therapy for habitual overspenders - but decided against iit on cost grounds? So that's at least something positive isn't it?

Simplest remedy would be to sell off all the stuff you have in the conservatory and the shed and that other place she hasn't discovered yet. You may not make much, but having the room back for her to sit in without the risk of safety equipment going off, may just placate her.

The general rule is that for the boat itself it must come in within budget, but for all the gadgets and other neccessities that get added the sky's the limit 'til SWMBO thinks enuff is enuff.

So seems if she hasn't closed the purse yet you still have some gadget and neccessity buying time left - so what're you doing wasting good buying time in front of the computer for? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

John?

I have been well and truly told enuff is enuff, negotiations have taken place to retain all gadgets aboard apart from the table patio heater which 'has' to go according to her /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I have been authorised expenditure on an auto bilge and bilge alarm as neither are fitted, so any ideas on those would be appreciated.

As for the conservatory and three sheds full of back up equipment, seems I may be visiting the 'for sale' forum as she wants them cleared out. I am trying to keep the marquee I bought to go camping with, but I bought that so we could camp with the car and boat in it with us, but there is no way the new boat will ever get in it /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif The 747 beauty parlour has to go, so anyone interested let me know, uniforms included /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As for the budget, apparently it was well and truly blown, but as I worked so hard she is covering the extra expense 'this time only' /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif . Still a smashing boat now with everything I could ever want, well until SIBS and Genoa /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Isnt there a touch of 'deja vu' here...seeem to remember a similar state of strained relationships with an earlier vessel?

I am truly astonished that you have neglected such an essential aspect of boat safety, even more so considering the expenditure on cosmetic and self indulgent fripperies.......

With the for sale forum £200 limit you will be taking a big hit on many of these items so some forumites will, hopefully, at least benefit from the fallout.

Boats may come and boats may go but sounds to me as if you have a SWMBO worth maintaining.......or do I have that the wrong way round? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am truly amazed that she is accompanying you to Genoa rather than confining you to base as a damage limitation exercise /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

She is luck to have me, simple as that /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

As for the auto bilge, very worrying indeed when I found out, especially for the miniscule cost of a float switch compared to all the other necessary equipment I have had to buy, so that is being done this week /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

This is an easy one to solve on the basis of one toy for you and one for SWMBO so you have to match your spending on your boat with spending on girlie things for her like a holiday, conservatory, new sofa or whatever. I find a wad of cash plus telling her she's got a day off to go buy clothes and shoes does the trick

That sounds great, but only one problem, I don't have any money to give her. She is the one with the money, but then again I guess a tenner in a fancy envelope shows I care, it's the thought that counts, isn't it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

She expects me to match her 50/50 on everything we buy, she wrote the cheque for the new boat and luckily she seems to have forgotten to ask for 50% of it, so I'm keeping quiet, maybe she will forget about it, she is just questioning the bits and bobs /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif. (Well it was her idea, I loved the Larson 240 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Tut, tut.

A bunch of flowers and a bottle of cheap plonk, SHOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

In future best look out for early signs,

'the look'
and comments like

" I thought we had discussed that earlier and you weren't going to do that tonight " /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
are early indications of 'SWMBO needs flowers'

By the way spare a thought for the poor sods following in your wake to the Chandlers to find it almost clear of stock. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Ah! so did our night out in the bar cause the purchase of flowers I saw you take onto your boat the following morning, or were you just after a bit of something to start the day off nicely? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks for everything by the way, swmbo says hello to the family /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Mini GCI is having her first ever day at school today /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

You know that oil pump you showed me in the chandlery, well on Saturday Barry_Winnett was looking for one for my new berth neighbour, what's the odds of that, I should have bought it i'm sure it could have come in handy /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Pete

Jut ask her how big a price does she put on her life, then that covers all the safety equipment and more. Tel her that the value of the boat and all its gadgets would never replace her.

Secondly tell her that the extra comforts were there so that she could live aboard in the manner that she is accustomed to rather than “camping”.

You spent all that money cos you love her so much.

Now how much do you want for the patio heater?
