Was interested to read in today's Torygraph that the EU has agreed to part fund a link between the Oder River and the Main Danube canal. i.e. a navigable route between the Baltic and the Black Sea should exist from 2011. This should be much more fun than the existing route up the Rhine for those, such as I, who cannot use the French canals.

I read about an "up-mast" route through Holland and the Kiel Canal to the Baltic some time ago, but can't trace it. Anyone out there know the right link?

2hulls=twice as good

Don't know about a link but the mast-up route will take you from Flushing or Hanswert past Amsterdam (at 2am) and through Friesland to Delfzijl. you can then do 60 miles from Norderney to Cuxhaven and a couple of hours on to the Kiel canal which is just under 100km. We use Brian Navin for the Dutch bit and Dutch/UK charts for the rest.

But make sure you fit some breaklights on the stern!... if you get the normal summer crowd, everyone closes up on the open sections and then all go hard stern, when they hit the bridges/locks!! can get quite agitated!

I met a few (German and dutch) boats who said there was a mast up route from the Elbe (near Cuxhaven) to Emden (opposite Deftzijl). I couldn't find it when I googled, but that would give a long boring inland alternative to the Waddensea and Frisian islands (which are really worth visiting!).

You can avoid the 2am Amsterdam run by going through the N Sea canal either to IJmuiden, or striking south after Amsterdam to Haarlem (?)

Going N the convoy through Amsterdam starts at midnight and emerges on the N side at 2 AM. From N to S you start at 2 AM.

Good alternative is taking the Haarlem diversion. Does take longer as there is another railway bridges wich only opens a couyple of times a day. An overnight stay in Haarlem is worth it, as Haarlem really is a gem and you can moor very close to the centre.
cheers

No, there is an inland waterway but you have to get your mast down. There is a number of fixed bridges and I believe the maximum air draft is 4 metres in the section between the Jadebusen and Emden, even less in the other section.
cheers

If Mudplugger finishes converting a 40' hull into a combine harvester, how is he going to get it through the Dutch locks?

The DOE project seems a really long way off as funding still seems elusive.

The pro-website has not been updated for a couple of years:

The opposition view to this project has good maps at:

I remember Tristan Jones being the first to go through the RMD several years before it opened. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Here is an opportunity for a new record
