I know, its not cruising, and it should be posted under items wanted, but it breaks the £200 limit, and all you money people read this section first /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Anyway if someone wants an inexpensive methord of guarenteed world wide coverage for a few weeks for their company or product, then the title sponsor position is still needed for the 2007 World championships.
I appologise for any offence that i cause with this, there is absolutely no financial gain to me, i am writing this as it helps our sport and will help make the event more enjoyable for the many overseas visitors who will come and compete.

If people own boats and want to race, why do they expect some corporation to put up oodles of dosh to let them enjoy their hobby?

As for guaranteed worldwide coverage, yeah, well, in Etchell Sailor International, maybe.

And most of the time it will be referred to as the Etchells Worlds, not the Honky Tonky Transistor Company Etchells World Championship.

Thanks for your comments

Hi Ken, thanks for your comments as it gives me an oppurtunity to reply, 2 years ago for a wonderful potrait as the prize I accepted sponsorship from B&G for the "B&G Farr40 UK Championships 2005" coverage by that name went in YW, Y&Y, Sailing World in the USA, ScuttleBUTT world wide, and upteen other locations, including the main Farr40 world wide web site, unfortunately I did not win the regatta,
if you pick the following link you will see the site organised for the 2006 Etchells worlds. You may not be aware but there is now a dedicate satelite TV channel called Sailing World (nothing to do with the mag) which also covers both racing and cruising.

often cruising sailors say "what benifit to me is racing", well most of the developments in design, materials and equipment start of at the racing stage of yachts and then permiate into mainstream cruising sailing, 3 easy examples are Winch designs, electronics and Mast materials, i could go on but hopefully I have answered some of your concerns.

Re: Thanks for your comments

I'm with you on racing design passing down to lesser motals, but 'twas ever the case before serious sponsorship. I raced extensively from the late 60 onwards, when sponsorship was a dirty word, and great racing was had by big fleets, When sponsorship came in on a per boat basis, then the arms race began in spades, sails and boats became disposable, expenses climbed and lots of owners decided they couldn't compete with corporate money, so fleets shrunk and fewer people went racing.

As to the Etchells, as a one-design that should restrict expenditure, so I don't see why a sponsor would be needed. Owners buy boats and kit, and stump-up entry fees and a YC organises the racing. Everybody gets as much enjoyment on the water, even if they have to buy their own drinks in the bar in the evening, and the overall winner doesn't get to take home a solid gold watch, Volkswagen Toerag (or whatever).

Unfortunately for a ISAF rated world chanpionships the expenses are quite extream, for instance International judges from other parts of the world have to be brought to the UK and and on full expenses, the amount of committee support boats required are increased, and overseas competitors are shipping boats from around the world,
to say that sponsorship is not required for an Etchells World Championships, would then lead onto why is sponsorship required for the Olympics? Why should we pay an entry to Cowes Week and Cowes week still require a sponsor, etc, etc.
Long gone are the days where Yacht Clubs provide a free service, and the lots of clubs now tend to have paid staff.
For £20,000 sponsorship I can assure you there are no free drinks at the bar and no high value prices being taken home by the winners.
