I went down to the boat today for the first time since mid December, just to check the mooring lines and bilges. She is moored in Swanwick where the marina staff do a great job of checking lines, shore power etc. I usually leave a dehumidifier running with two tube heaters, so even really cold spells can be coped with.
To my horror I found that the ET05 thermostat** to one of the heaters had apparently shorted out internally, burnt out and is now a misshapen lump of smelly plastic. The wood panel into which the plug socket is fitted had a black smoke smear about 15cm square. Luckily nothing else had caught fire, or else the boat itself might have gone up in flames.
I have two other ET05 thermostats, one on the boat and one more at home, about which I am now naturally worried.
Have any other forumites had any similar problems with this kind of thermostat?

**ET05-MD thermostat, distributed by Timeguard Ltd, Edgeware Rd, London. New last year, worked fine last winter.

As usual Google is your friend - just Google "ET05 thermostat" and start reading. Seems they have known faults, are made in China and it has been reported that they are readily available on Ebay, Amazon etc for buttons (as low as 1p plus postage) as dealers are offloading their **** as fast as they can.
Can't speak from personal experience though as I use thermostats salvaged from redundant convection and "white meter" heaters

Thanks Cliff - but the Amazon reviews are actually nearly all good, save for the frequent comment that the thermostat temperature settings are rubbish. I didn't see anything relating to self-immolation by the unit.
