Sailors in Essex and particularly in Bradwell ought to be concerned about a news story thats just appeared in New Scientist

Newly released information obtained under the Freedom of Information act, reveals that the now decommissioned Bradwell Nuclear Power Station site was shortlisted by the government as a site for underground Nuclear Waste disposal and is likely to be a candiate in any future review.

This in spite of the fact that this part of Essex was the scene of Britain's most destructive earthquake

There was speculation about this many years ago, so the 'revelation' comes as no real surprise!

Yes, the earthquake you are referring to had it's epicentre in Colchester I believe, and was about as destructive as the 9.15 from Liverpool Street rumbling past your office!
 
I'd be seriously concerned if the 9:15 from Liverpool Street went past MY office. Mind you, I can see all the Aberdeen to Inverness trains from the window . . .

From the place of the Shaky Isles I can assure you that a magnitude 5.2 earthquake, such as the one you refer to, is barely just starting to qualify as an earthquake of any merit. A bit of a shake up, and certainly brick buildings of 150 years ago built to withstand nothing more than a gentle breeze may fall down (as they still do where they live in mud huts), but would in todays terms be lucky to do very much more than shake a few cans off the shelves of the local supermarket.

I was in a 5 point something tremmor it shook my badly made bed to bits. When I woke up it was quite a shock to find myself so close to the floor. If something breaks in a 5 it is very badly made.
 
As one who lives within the fallout zone of Bradwell this is not a shock, in fact the local population have known about the Nirex plans for many years.The noise from the protests has only just died down or i should say diverted in the direction of a wind farm proposal.
Potton Is. is a different story as its has no civilian population and is wholy owned by the MOD. Access is prohibited so in theory they could do as they please.

Just done a quick check on the statistics here to give some idea of a 5.2 mag. earthquake. In the last 5 years NZ has had 164 earthquakes of Magnitude 5 or greater (ie approx one every 11 days). Of those 6 were centred within approx 25 km of our home - we have never had anything even move on a shelf with those, so, as can be seen, not much to worry about.

Think we are going to have to get used to this sort of thing, what with the great saviour 'wind power' being attacked by the nimby's, it looks as if Nuke power is now going to be the new great saviour again and as long as they get the science right why not, its got to be more advanced than it was in the 50's and 60's hasnt it?

Essex sailors have the last laugh. Thanks to the supposed reputation of this beautiful county and its lovely folk, our waters are uncrowded and unpolluted. And the sea temperature is of course a little warmer and the fish emerge half cooked, all thanks to our Bradwell kettle. Bring on the nuclear waste, I say. Keep Essex snob free.

We really don't want the likes of anyone who considers themselves above it. One of the reasons I left Surrey and London. Its quite good that they have managed to herd and fence all the snobs in the South, and make them pay for the privilege.

27 pubs within one days sail from my mooring, and unlikely to be charged more than half (and most likely free) the rates some other areas of the country seem to accept.

Been here 18 years now, and feel nicely irradiated.

Of course we will have to be careful that we maintain the yob defences from Dagenham out to Southend, and Bradwell scaring peeps to the East. It worries me we have only minor defences in the North in the form of Colchester, and not much to the very West. After all, the Epping Forest is hardly a hot bed of anything except dogging.

Jim, You obviously have not been to Colchester recently, the way the grass is NOT being cut means you have to be local to find the roads and it now takes 45 mins to get thru...and the mud on the Colne is getting deeper.We are doing our bit to keep the tourists away! Enjoying the new Vessel?
