We have the Airtronic D4, 7 years old and appears not to have been serviced (from records inherited from seller). Working fine. Should we have it done? Can I do it myself?

It's not a big job, certainly within the capability of average DIY skill levels. There's full details of how to do it in the manual, which you can download here if you don't already have one. However, if it's working fine (ie starts easily, runs smoothly without smoke), I'd be tempted to leave it alone for now.

PVP Thanks for the manual...

It's a lot more detailed than the one I have. The biggest problem is getting access to the unit. It's in the cockpit locker hidden away under vent pipes for the engine and loads of other cables.

Re: PVP Thanks for the manual...

I stripped ours down a couple of years ago it was also working fine, but blew two ‘glow-plugs’ in the space of 48hours. I discovered that after 10 years of use the burner ‘mesh’ and chamber were pretty chocked up with hard ‘coke’ and needed a bit of bashing and wire-brushing to thoroughly clean.

The main concern is a gasket between the burner and cabin air chambers, which should be replaced, however ours came apart easily and I didn’t feel the need to fit a new one.

Remove it from the boat and stripping it down should be within the capabilities of someone mechanically minded with a reasonable toolkit. I would advise against trying to do this ‘in situ’ given your description of the location.

I have the dreaded D4, should you decide on service, Will Heywood of Heywood Engineering seems to know more than most.
You can get his contact deets from the dockmaster at woolverstone
