Reading one of Hiscocks books he dedicated several lines to the eating of chips which his wfe fryed up on the paraffin stove.Personally after being burnt by cooking oil ;cooking chips seems a pretty dangerous activity far out in the Biscay...

Yes but he had a long-keeler.

As a matter of fact, you can cook very acceptable chips in a double skillet on top of the stove. Parboil them, shake them around in a freezer bag with a tablespoon of oil, then bake them. Or you can do them in the oven if you have one.

Yep, don't bother with an open pan. SWMBO doesn't even parboil. New spuds, cut into 1/4" slices and 'bake' in a well-oiled tray. They're not traditional greasy-spoon chips, but that's a bonus. Spot of garlic and freshly ground pepper...hmm, it's lunchtime, excuse me...

For a small portion (max 2 people) you can shallow fry chips. Just cut the spuds & chuck in a frying pan with a few mm of oil (or lard) in the bottom of the pan. Turn with a slice regularly until evenly browned. Doesn't take long either. not something I would do in a seaway, but OK for a harbour/ anchorage if there isn't a chippy nearby & you fancy a portion.

My memory may be a bit unreliable, but didn't Shane Acton do chips out in the cockpit on a Primus in a biscuit tin?

Shane Acton on Shrimpy fried a pan of chips on a portable stove crossing Biscay. He did it while steering with one hand on the tilller. He had to steady the stove between his legs.

Unbelievable? Maybe, but wrtten in his book.

Edit. My keyboard is too slow.

Aye back in the day when men were men, but unbelievable? No not really, we who sail small boats do all sorts of things on a needs must basis, the floating bungalow brigade would have a fit of the vapours at the antics of some of us:D

Ye Gods man, don't drift the fred to one about iron sh*tehawks!! They are already twiddling on about them elsewhere.:D

My humblest apologies. I did indeed go astray there.

Interesting idea, though...almost surreal. Drop all your earnest, considered replies into entirely different threads.

Here, for instance...

For the record, she recovered, using impregnated insoles. And the advice interpreted from the Torah, went down well with Mike.

I think most people take advice from the Tora, for servicing iron sh*tehawks, or maybe it's the Korahn??

For a moment there, Chrusty, I thought I might have been thinking of Torah Wilcox. But, sir, I was right (which is in itself worthy of a post), it is definitely spelt with an 'H'. :)

Topic...yeah, I remember. Nice little chocolate bar, wasn't it? Haven't seen one for years. Heaven knows how much two-stroke oil I've used since then. At least that's what SWMBO calls the lotion...
