i have a pinhole in the silencer. Engine is raw water cooled and hole is below the normal waterline inside the silencer. Would epoxy resin be OK for a temp fix? Where I am there's not much chance of getting it braized, certainly at this time of year. Did a google but can't find the melting point of epoxy. Manual says normal operating temp is 70 deg c, so by time water gets to the exhaust it should be less than that. Anyone tried this?

Thanks

Is it the Water trap type.
If so It works.
Mine was stainless with pin holes around the welds.
A good wire brush and coat with epoxy and a year later its still watertight.

I am pretty sure that normal epoxy will be getting very soft at 70C. But there are plenty of alternatives designed for high temp; 'plastic metal' type stuff, and stuff intended for mending car exhausts. A car bits shop would be the best place to look.

Ooops. To late, first coat on. Though doubt if i could get plastic metal to stick. Anyway, the water coming out is about bath temp and it's close to the silencer so doubt if the temp there will be anywhere near 70C. Perhaps I'm about to find out.....

Should be fine then.

Interesting (?) piece of trivia - the highest temperature at which you can bear to hold your hand hard against something indefinitely is 55C. This seems remarkably reliable and constant from person to person. We use it to judge the pouring temp of agarose gels.

A corrosion hole appeared in the leg of my Mercury 7.5 outboard, just underneath the powerhead. I epoxied a small piece of alloy over the hole. It was still fine three years later. I guess you will be OK fixing your silencer with epoxy, too.

Cheers! Neil

arreldite (not sure of the correct spelling) will do the job temp will not be problem (just read the label). Any car spares place will stock it
