Epoxy Tar

IMHO I would not use epoxy paint on timber below the waterline unless the construction is very stable ie Ply or cold/hot moulded. The problem with carvel or clinker construction is that as the structure inevitably flexs the paint will crack (seams in paticular) allowing water to get beneath the paint. My preference is for epoxy tar for the cast ballast keel after grinding all rust off. (janina got 7 coats in 1998 and is still perfect). The timber was taken back to bare wood then recieved 5 coats of International metalic pink primer. Then one coat anti-foul primer. This has now lasted 7 yrs with anti-foul re-applied every 18 months or so, regards, Mike

Its brill on cast keels /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, and great on wood /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, its just that its crap around the joints between different bits of wood - carvel -= lots of cracks /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
