+Need to build a shower tray for te boat before the winter closed in.

I plan to make a plywood skin and glass over it. then put a teak grate over to stand on.

I reckon I will need about 3 kg epoxy resin, plus some woven matting as the 15 kilos of chopstrand I have won't do the job.. or will it?

Can anyone advise best source/type of resin and whether i should use the chopped strand or go with woven.

The tray itself will only catch water and won't bear weight, other than the water.

Thanks,

Nick

chopped strand should only be used with polyester resin. as you plan to use it over ply, epoxy is essential. best to use glass cloth rather than woven roving as you will only need a thin layer. i'm assuming the ply gives the strength and the resin sticks it in place and makes it waterproof. i would have thought for that you'd need less than 1kg which makes west or SP affordable.

consider rounding the corners by using a fillet of epoxy+microfibres: that will make it stronger and easier to clean.

With the teak grating, make sure it is sealed really well otherwise it sucks up gunge and smells horrid, and scrubbing and bleaching only provides very short term cure.

I think Polyester Resin is quite adequate after all our bath is made of it and I bask in it just fine. (Most of the time I stand in it and have a shower and I havent gone through the bottom yet.)You can use choped strand mat or glass cloth or a mixture of both. After sanding it smooth put a jelcoat on it and use it to seal any cut edges. It floats over just fine but don't do it in the living room, so out in the garden if you do'nt mind. It only needs about 1% to 2% hardener though otherwise it will take ages to set if you use to much.

You asked for sources. You could try Blue Gee in Poole just over the swing bridge, they have everything you require, and were very helpful to me. I hope this helps.

I decided against polyester because of teh need for gel coat or long wait to put a layer of epoxy on it. SWMBO is complaining about the marina showers.. again.

Figure I will stich and glue a tray from ply fillet the corners, resin and cloth, then more resin, then 2 pack paint.

Looked at teak grates and almost fainted -- 300 quid or more ouch.. looked at B&Q £25 hardwoud shower tray thing 800 mm by 800 mm should do the trick and can be replace yearly if needed.
