I intend starting a build of a 18ft day sailer this winter and I am just putting the finishing touches to my workshop facilities.....shed actually......and was on Atlantic Cladding website looking for roof cladding.

On Page 17 they are selling 20kg packs of resin for about £50 whereas 'boating' suppliers seem to be around £80 for 7.5Kgs. Am I missing something or is fibreglass just cheaper when it is put on a shed roof and expensive when put on a boat?

All the same i think but what is the concern if its just a roof, our kitchen extension came from them and years later its fine.

I think you will find that sea water and Bristol Channel water is wetter than rainwater! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You might want to check exactly what you are getting. Your heading suggests you want epoxy resin whereas most roofing products are polyester resin. There is a world of difference not the least of which is that polyester is not an adhesive if you are building a wooden boat. Also the cloth used is different as it is impregnated with a different powder, they will not work with the wrong resin.

Most GRP boats are laid up in polyester which is fine for that purpose and it is cheaper than epoxy (which is why bulkheads etc often need retabbing after a few years i.e they are tabbed with polyester which being poor at adhesion evetually lets go) .

You can repair polyester GRP lay up with either more poyester or epoxy but you can't put polyester on top pf epoxy as it won't stick.

If you are building in marine ply and don't feel it is a desired design feature for your new build to fall apart it's best you find out what you're sticking it together with first! Epoxy is not the only answer but polyester is not one of the others.

I agree with John Champion that "resin" supplied by a roofing company will definitely be polyester which isnt any use to you.

Thats a good price though for 20 kg of polyester resin.May be a usefull contact for anyone doing repairs or alterations to a grp boat.

Give these people a ring ask for technical tell them about your thoughts and buy West System, probably from Robbins Bristol I would think - C-packs are significantly cheaper

Be interested to know what they have to say ref roofing stuff !

We have built a 15 foot and used close to £500 worth of West System resin and hardener, filleting compound, brushes, gloves etc.

We probably over engineered it due to inexperience but still...

Should have made it clear ours was built from ply, filleted, epoxy coated etc

Another thought - epoxy coat the bulkheads, planking BEFORE assembly - makes life simple after

We didn't - it's hell doing it on the inside after!

Look on youtube for others doing same - see the guy making a mast - H&S would die!

Plenty of American sites give pics and video and there is a chap in Holland making a Farrier 39 who has used vacuum bagging technique with machinery he invented he's v good and cam is on most times - if you're interested

http://www.amateurboatbuilding.com/articles/building/fram/farrier_f39.html

Not sure he is the one - will look further -

Take photos as you go along - we didn't for some odd reason - be interested to see them on here - but make them spaced out you know - not here we are about to pick up the plank and now we've picked it up and we're carrying it over and...... oh you've all gone into a coma!

Just found the guy from Holland! He has become very knowledgeable and happy to share it too the cam is still on and as you see space is limited to building one sponsonat a time then taking it outside- He built onto the side of is house extended the garage I bleieve - really brilliant in my opinion

http://www.fram.nl/

I would love to have a go but wife says she will leave - she is v knowledgeable about use of epoxy, filleting, etc as she got involved but refuses new project

We'll see!

All beer is the same thing so you might just as well buy any beer! Or timber, or meat or fish eyc etc

There are numerous different resin types and within each type there are different specs. Your roof isnt permanently wet like a boat hull so it doesnt need a highly waterproof resin.
