Hi,
I have two epoxy sheathed water tanks wich a fne in every way except I am a little worried about the water. I know epoxy tanks are "supposed" to be completely safe but I am still cautious. If I wanted to put a filter on the tanks for drinking water can anyone tell me which type of element is the approriate one. Thanks for any help. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A very short check-list for you.
Was the epoxy approved food-grade?
Does the applicator specialise in these type of coatings?
If the answer is no to either, take oldsaltoz advice. Activated charcoal filters get just about any resin based nasties.

The water from our tanks has a nasty taint but the water from our General Ecology filter is better than any bottled water - it is really nice. The performance looks very impressive, for details see General Ecology

When I looked into the use of epoxy on the tanks of my Prout (it had osmosis so I wanted to prevent re-occurrence) I found no epoxy resins avalable that were food grade. Whats more, I was warned by one maker that his epoxy leached real nasties and should not be used on drinking water tanks. Other makers simply hadnt found it viable to take the necessary tests so didnt know. I decided not to risk it. And I wouldnt trust an activated charcoal filter either - how do you know when it is becoming used up, even if you are sure that it works with the chemicals you are worried about.

There are lots of poly resins that are food grade I believe. Alternatively, I ended up using a homwbrew 3 gal water barrell for drinking water which proved entirely adequate in some long coastsal cruises. After all, wine comes in bottles! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thanks for all that. Subject to your comments I searched around some more and found a .pdf document on the net from West Systems. They say not to use epoxy for water or petrol tanks, mainly because it is impossible to ensure complete cure of all the hardener without heat curing and perfect mixing. Hmm, now I have two big epoxy water tanks. We've generaly used them for washing but recently started drinking it. Think I'll get that fresh water deck wash I always wanted. Thanks very much all.

Have you tried getting onto the people who made and fitted them for that purpose?
