EPIRB\'s on aircraft

Hi

Has anyone had any problems transporting their EPIRB by plane (either hand baggage or in the hold) to their yacht. Looking at transporting UK to Caribbean and looked at web sites of airline and whilst they stress sharp obkects and explosives it doesn't give a list (that I can find) on unacceptable baggage.

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Re: EPIRB\'s on aircraft

I have transported on both european & TA airlines with no problems. I also often take a hand held VHF. In both cases this is in the hold but I do disconnect and remove the battery, taking care to tape over the battery terminals and stow each in a diferent part of the same bag or in different bags.

Even the Greeks who now X-ray EVERY piece of baggage as you enter the airport seem more concerned over a bottle of Metaxa in your checked baggage than bits of electronics. My bag often contains a cordless drill, several sharp hand tools and other bits & pieces.

Re: EPIRB\'s on aircraft

I had an epirb rejected by security as hand luggage about 15 years ago coming back from Darwin & made to put it in the hold. It was an early 406MHz unit that probably showed up as a large opaque blob on xray, plus you could have easily knocked someone out with it! It had been on a wrecked yacht & failed to go off (I recall) so looked rather bashed up as well.
