Picked up a sailing book tonight and was scanning through as you do and noticed the price of EPIRBS . £895 - £1200 Thought these must be new but the pictures looked like something I had already seen at HALF the price .. Silly me reading last years sailing mag but it did make good reading .. How can you reduce the price by £500 and still make a profit .. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Same picture .. Same model .. just HALF the price .. Perhaps I will wait till next year to buy one .. They cannot cost that much to make .. Is there anything in them apart from the batteries .. Also found a site for BATTERIES .. When it comes time to change it will cost more to change the batteries than a new unit .. Perhaps a couple of Durecells will work .. After all its only a battery .... Sounds like a big ripoff .. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I guess its like most electronics. I did a silly thing and bought a TV just before the flat screen LCD ones came out. £2k and now worth more as scrap metal. Reminds me of a joke; Did you hear about the bloke wh /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gifo had a micro electronics company? business was so good he had to get a smaller factory!

Thanks. The wonder of Google. Is Panasonic cells good or bad? I can't tell. I have panasonic AA batteries in my remote for the Tivo and they're not too dear. I only bought the blinking EPIRB at Mrs Gunfleet's insistence so I wouldn't die crossing the channel/Dover Straights. If it's hundreds of squids to replace the battery when the old one runs out (next year) I'll have to

a) get a new device
b) avoid English Channel
c) accept that all good things must come to an end and drown when t-boned by a bulk carrier. This looks favourite.
