Just need to confirm with those in the know: at this point I'm only interested in the navigable conditions at the start of the canal between the (D703?) bridge at the far western side of the port, and Petit Mandirac. Not too sure I can totally trust the books, and although I have checked Grehan's site and asked Mr Google, at the time of writing this I am suffering the effects of a short night, and Mr Nescafe is refusing to play ball, so apologies if the info is already out there but my current blondness is affecting my ability to find it!

Assuming the air draft is anywhere between: 2.60-3.30 m and draft: 1-1.40 m (depending on the regularity of dredging)? Exact heights/depths from 'the old salts :D' out there would be gratefully appreciated by this 'ere greenhorn.

Thanks in advance. Now for another cup of joe...

When we attempted to exit the canal in May 2005 there was considerable silting up to and beneath the bridge. We draw 1.4 metres and ran aground about 100 metres before the bridge. A passer-by told me that the depth was up to his thighs beneath the bridge. I inflated the dinghy and took the lead line with me. He was right, about 0.6 metres.

I would guess the air draft to be as you say, we were somewhere over 3 metres and did not anticipate any problems.

I'm short of time right now, but if you check my site (there is a photo of the bridge you're talking about) and the Port la Nouvelle page, you'll find a telephone number for the yard/chandlery there that does mast stepping. They are within sight of that bridge and might be able to tell you exactly. Other than that, it's the 'normal' air draft dimensions for the Midi as given elsewhere.

Thanks, Grehan. Looking at the particular page again at this moment over the rim of my coffee cup and wondering if I dare unleash my dubious French upon those poor chaps. The reason I posted this is I was under the impression (perhaps wrongly given my current fuzzy state? :D)that heights/depths can be variable there. But will def. do as suggested once (finally) awake(ish) and with dictionary/phrase book/rabbits foot in hand ;).

We went through from Narbonne to Port Nouvelle and then out to sea last July. Was a bit weedy about halfway down but got through without doing anything other than storing the mud a bit when tying up to the bank. We draw 1mtr.
