does anyone know of a nice marina to stay on any of the islands that have got good entertainment for kids we are new to the area kids are 10 and 13. club house swimming pool etc /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif we are based in Denia marina

Club Nautico (Denia) has a nice pool - sliding back covers when the sun is up. See when the Moors & Christians parades are on (Moraira was last week and weekend) and do at least one - Javea can't be far away and Benitachell put on a good show as well. Pop into the tourist office (just opposite the Balearics ferry booking office) and see what else is going on.

Er, why do you need a swimming pool when you've got hundreds of anchorages with clear blue water which is 25deg+ during the summer/autumn? Only joking. Actually I have the same problem entertaining my 13yr old boy on the boat

OK, these are the marinas we've visited around the Balearics which have swimming pools

Club de Mar, Palma (12yr old + only in the pool)
Club de Vela, Andraitx
Arenal Marina, El Arenal
Alcudiamar Marina, Alcudia (marina hotel)
Cala d'Or (need to join the club)

Of this lot, we rate Alcudiamar as the most kid friendly as they can walk or bike into town without crossing any busy roads to sample the 'delights' of Alcudia which include arcades, bars with Sky TV, ice cream shops, British supermarkets which sell Kit Kats and, to be fair, a safe beach

You will have to book well ahead in any of these marinas in the high season to get a berth

Drop me a PM if you plan on visiting Majorca. Maybe your kids can entertain mine /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thank you for your help, where are you based Majorca? My oldest is Jacob who is 13 and he was asking about evening entertainment kids discos or the like. i dont know cant please kids today! /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif may drop you a line when we are out we are there 23rd july to the 10th aug /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi marcliff, we're based in Club de Mar, Palma. Unfortunately our summer holiday starts the weekend yours finishes but we may be out for a weekend in late July/early Aug
Have you booked any berths yet 'coz you will find it difficult to just turn up on the day and expect to find a berth

Thats a shame but sure we will bump into each other, we are out a fair bit. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif We have only cruised around the coast from Denia to alicante but not yet visited the islands (1st season this year) and we have got away with fuel berths every night! do you think this is too risky? and how do you go about booking a berth? and how much will it cost /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Hello there
Well im based just a little south of Torrevieja. There is a large waterpark in Torrevieja which is ok & of course Terramitica in Benidorm that should keep them amused for a while. Im cruising to Ibiza myself next week & will be somewhere along the NW coast fo a couple of weeks......Nat

Just remembered there was also a kids disco in San Miguel Ibiza.Age group was about 12 to 15 if I remember correctly.Adults were welcome if you want to keep an eye on them. Its up near Angies Bar which is about 10mins walk from the Cala where we were anchored.
Hope this helps....Nat

Actually we were berthed in Denia for the 2004 season and came out to the Balearics for a week's cruise in October of that year and never went back! To be honest, the cruising is better in the Balearics; being islands you can always find a sheltered coastline and, certainly in Majorca, there's more to do, especially for kids, if the weather is too bad to go boating. I also got tired of the long drive from Alicante airport to Denia. Denia marina itself is very good. Have they finished that hotel yet?

Re booking berths, you just have to phone the marina as far in advance as possible and follow up with a fax if you can. Offer to pay a deposit to ensure that you secure the place. In France, a €20 note in the right hands often magics up a berth where none existed before but that does'nt seem to work in Spain. Yes the fuel berth mooring is always a good idea but the the trouble is that a lot of peeps know that trick already and get in before you. There's always your anchor of course. When we go cruising, I try to work on a 2 nights anchoring out/ 1 night in a marina principle basically to top up with supplies and water. You will find marinas in the Balearics a bit more expensive than the mainland especially Ibiza and Formentera where we've paid €180 a night for a 15m berth in some places. Thats a good a reason as any to spend a few nights at anchor

Thanks Nat for your help we will try that it sounds good! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Terramitica in benidorm sounds good we havent been there yet but we are going this summer! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Mike
funny you should say that as you know it is our first season in spain and Denia is lovely but when the weather comes in you are stuck and the weather seems to come in more in Denia than any were else! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gifwe have been going quite regularly since October and been quite un lucky with the weather as the mrs wont go out when it is a bit choppy (we also have a 11 mouth old baby with us /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)so we have seen loads of the marina and know the staff all by name now /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifand NO they have not finished the hotel /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif however the reception has moved into the building

180 thats a bit steep is'nt it whats the average then? again this year at least mrs won't anchor out side of a marina over night so better get my wallet out again /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gifthen again cheeper to stick her and kids in a hotel for the night /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I did'nt mention it but I always felt that that little corner of Spain around Denia had worse weather than anywhere else. The locals deny it of course but on at least 3 occasions we left a port in blazing sunshine and arrived in Denia in a rain storm. For sure that coastline has higher winds than the Balearics. A lot of the time during the summer, the predominant wind is easterly and, in the afternoons, that wind gets magnified by seabreeze effects. I noted as well that the waves set up by this wind hit the very steep-to shoreline to the south of Denia and get relected back to set up very nasty sea conditions. A trip from, say, Moraira to Denia in the afternoon can be very lumpy. The other problem, of course, is that there is nowhere really to hide from an easterly wind on that coast. The weather was definitely part of the reason why we stayed in Majorca
Average mooring cost in Majorca and Menorca is €70 - 100/ night for a 15m berth but at least 50% more in Ibiza. Ibiza is only 60 miles from the mainland at it's closest point, as well as being very attractive so it tends to get loads of visitors, and, of course, it does'nt have enough marinas hence the berthing rates are outrageous

yes i think next year we will look to move to majorca or menorca but i have been told full time berths are very rare. How do they compare price wise to Denia and are the flights to Majorca more expensive? We do feel a bit trapped sometimes when the weather comes in not really what we thought spain would be like! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

marcliff, flights to Palma, Majorca are dead easy, probably even more numerous than Alicante. Take your pick from BA, Bmi, Easyjet, Air Berlin, Monarch, Flybe, Thomsonfly and others. Fares are about the same as Alicante and, as normal, vary tremendously according to whether your trip is in school hols or not
Menorca is not nearly as well served by airlines as Mallorca and to be honest I don't know what the fares are like. Actually I would hesitate to recommend Menorca as a boating base especially with kids. It seems much quieter than Majorca especially out of season and IMHO the weather is quite a bit windier than Majorca especially the south of Majorca
Finding a berth in either Majorca or Menorca is not going to be easy but not impossible if you're lucky

Thanks for all your help Mike, /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif hope to see you out there soon /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
i have emailed club de Mar and they only take bookings few days prior to our arrival, i am still emailing the rest of the list you gave me /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
