Entering Walton Backwaters

My rule of thumb is to assume a metre plus tide between Pye End and No2 - think there's actually a little more than that. Stone Point, however - you need to look at the chartlet to get through there...

At any half decent tide, you can save a mile when coming from the south by going straight to No2 buoy and get almost as much water as from Pye End. I usually reckon the depth as 0.9m at datum in this region. StonePoint seems to be OK this year.

I am currently at anchor at Stone Point and have been back and forth to Hamford Water a number of times this year at all states of the tide but my draft is only 0.7m.

From experience the shallowest bit is between the Island Point North Cardinal and the Plumtree, the port hand mark off Stone Point. As I write we are just coming off low tide and a succession of large yachts are transiting in both directions but it is neapy.

However, tidal depth here are very dependent on weather conditions and high pressure can produce far less water than the predicted depths so I am reluctant to give hard figures.

My advice would be to arrive at Pye End at mid-tide rising (heaps or springs) and unless you have extreme draft you should have no problems but do stick to the buoyed channel, which is accurate.

Footie just starting so must go.

If you are coming in and get past Pye End (for my 1.5m 2hrs after low is always fine) and are on a rising tide, you should have no trouble getting into Hamford Water or the Walton Channel but might hit mud further up, usually just before the pontoons outside Titchmarsh.
