I've had the Entel for two years.

Initial reason for purchase was the Li-ion battery in a handheld for £150, a rarity then.

No complaints apart from the on/off button also tends to turn the squelch control on mine.

Only downside is that it is (as far as I know) the only handheld which still commands the same flippin price as two years ago............. but at least you can take that as a recommendation as to its popularity.

Three other people in my marina have bought the Entel after "borrowing" mine when theirs have expired.

I have had one for over 3 years - it has been dunked, bashed, dropped, kicked and generally abused in an every day capacity but still comes up laughing every time.

Had mine 2 years. It performs well, coverage not alot different from my fixed set,and it seems to hold charge indefinitely when not in use.

I've had mine for at least 4 years.... absolutely no problems. Maintains charge forever! Only charged it about 3 times last season. Highly recommended. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Not had a good experience. Had mine for 2 years - can't read the screen now - it's so cracked and crazed, and the squelch knob doesn't work anymore.

(Despite being stored out of sunlight when not in use)

Entel wanted a £100 to fix it, so I bought a new ICOM instead - and that one floats.

Had one for two or three years now and it has been dropped, dunked and generally abused in that time - still works great and batt life is excellent. One of the best bit's of kit I have bought.

I gather the Icom is now a good unit as it also have the Li-Lon batt but I have no experience of this.

Thanks to all for your replies, which on a whole seem very convincing, except for John Strudwick's opinion. What I gather from this is that your unit seems to be a more recent made one, which makes me wonder if they have changed the spec of the display glass, or has yours been knocked about a bit more than the rest?
Obviously they viewed it as user damage if they were charging you for repair, as you say it is two yrs old, and they come with a three year warranty.
I spoke to a member of the Entel sales team who told me that they (like most other makes of hh vhf) are not classed as GMDSS transcievers under the marine communications regulations, and not intended for safety and distress purposes, which was a little confusing, but thats not to say it cant be used to make a distress call. Something to think about.
I also asked and was told that the radio MUST be switched OFF while been charged, otherwise the memory can be currupted.
I have sent you a PM John.

Thanks again, C_W.
