Ensigns

Here's a psychological teaser for you all: Italians are lavishly keen on flag-flying on official occasions and places (flags in schools, town halls, mayors with tricolour sashes, etc) but yachties have old and wee ensigns tied with old bits of string to a halyard; the Brits fly few flags at home but have ensigns about five times as large. And the French? Eh bien...! What does it all mean? I feel we ought to be told.


P.S. Can anyone tell me where I can order a courtesy-flag sized red ensign to wear on my Italian-reg boat?
