Need a new Red Duster. Sizes quoted are 1/2 yard, 3/4 yard and so forth. Is that the "long" side or the "short" one? As I need a staff to go with the ensign I'd like them to be in proportion!

Long side, our yard and a half is about 5/8 yard deep.

Long side is what is quoted. If you get one the size of a RN Battle Ensign when it gets cold you can wrap yourself up in it!

I have an Alpha about that big. A naval friend does have a battle ensign, worn on active duty when things were shot at and from the ship. Ship had a charity raffle. I have told him he may not fly it from my boat

There is probably a demand for an inflatable ensign. This would allow us to blow it up nice and big when we feel proud of the UK's foreign policy, but let it down to very small when the policy is shameful. Currently I should suggest about 3".
