Just resealed the bases of my dorade covers. Wonderful stuff but I look like I’ve showered in it. I know you can use butyl tape instead but a quick google reveals all sorts. What’s the best type/source to use instead of the dreaded sticky stuff?

I've been using double sided glazing tape for over 20 yrs and it never leaks. 50m roll, 10x3mm but comes in a range of sizes.
It's a neoprene/foam type tape

I used the neoprene foam type tape to rebed new windows never again, the tape seemed to work its way out and then the birds pecked at jt,arrived at the boat with all the cushions soaking wet.Thought I must have been unlucky the first time so did it again same thing happened.
Seemed as if the sun shining softened the adhesive.
Used butyl tape with no problems.

Sounds like you used something different to what I use . In more years of double glazing than I care to mention I have never ever seen that. The proper tape sticks to virtually anything instantly and is really difficult to remove the glue. I used it to seal around a flue exit on deck , 100c and it never melted.
Buy it from a double glazing suppliers as many sell scotch 3m.
It's a close cell double sided adhesive security tape.
Even the weight of a patio unit is no problem holding it in place with the correct stuff
