I have an enclosed wheelhouse which I find wonderful for the usual English Climate. Last weekend with wall to wall sunshine, it was also great - cool and an escape from the relentless sun.

Would Englander care to pass a comment? 'er in doors would like me to remove most of the lid when we put the boat in the Med in a couple of year time.

Englander has two doors in the side, whixch when open allow air to pass through, suitably cooling the inside of the wheelhouse, in fact it can get quite chilly in there, with the wind over the beam. Also I have an outside steering position and a wander lead on my autopilot, so I can wander about the deck and still steer the boat. If I had rear opening door, I would fit a hatch in the roof of the wheelhouse opening forward, to catch the wind, when sailing and the possiblity of fitting a widnscoop over it at anchor. I have two of them for my forward hatches and it's like a hurricane blowing through the boat, have to shut the hatches sometimes! A wheelhouse is a great asset in any climate, you can shelter from the weather, be it sun or rain. Don't cut the roof off, you will regret it. Any further info, just ask.

I'll keep it on - er in doors was more worried about her tan! Anyway there is a huge stern deck on which she can put her deck chair ( yes we have room for 2 deck chairs)

Having had Corsair for 5 years, I would not want to do a chanel crossing in the spring with an open cockpit anymore - gone totally soft, but at least I enjoy it now, despite what the elements throw at you

I have Nicholson 38 with grp wheelhouse roof, removable canvas sides and rear, fixed glass front.

The top is removable but have never seen another with the top off - even at 35 degrees.

Steering is comfortable whatever the temperature, if sailing there is always a draft, if motoring a suitably positioned 12v fan can provide the necessary breeze.

Its ideal in 'harry roughers' and great to be able to watch all the others in foul weather gear when we are still in shirt sleeves.

Yes lets hear it for wheelhouses, however I was out the other night in Portsmouth harbour at 1:00 am and was horrified to find how little I could see from inside, mind you it was pi22ing down. I had to call my daughter from her warm berth to sit out on the leeward side and ride shotgun.

That was my 1st excusion at night with this boat and just about the only snag I can think of against the wheelhouse. When on the mooring its a bit like having a conservatory on the house:it feels like summer all year round ( Oh alright spring then!).

Even on long trips one arrives in good shape and much better equiped to deal with crisis, like spilling yr coffee or treading on the sleeping dog.

Sneakily! I have an outside steering/engine control place, at the port, after end of the wheelhouse, where I can stand up and see over the wheelhouse. Great for close quarter manouvering. Especially if I moor port side to. Anchoring, I have to do from inside the wheelhouse, now I've made a cable counter, I don't haver to guess (by time) the amount of chain I have out and by counting down again, can haul the anchor right into the hawse, very handy. I am trying to get a piccie of Englander arranged, I will succeed sometime!
