I know enuf to service my own engine - rather than leave it to the "experts"

However - what about the outdrive -Volvo 280 - where can I get a (free) manual or list of things to do and a basic set of instructions rather than just "change the oil".

Now I've got the time - I can do it myself.

I got one of those on mine. Not much to do to'em really. What you wanna know. Probably the hardest bit is setting the reverse latch mech. All the grease points have nipples or Zerk fittings as the yanks call'em. Dont forget the one inside the engine comp. Also what gets overlooked is the grease fitting on the bell housing. It greases the bearings in the intermediate shaft twixt engine and drive.
Changing oil is self explanitry. Use engine oil in it. Check gaiters for splits and stuff. The exhaust one is sposed to have the hole in it though! Oh, when you change the oil, put a new O ring under the dipstick filler. Thats the one in the middle of the top cover. The filler is the one thats raised. Found the easiest way to do it is measure out yer oil and use one of those little pump things to pump it in as the oil takes a while to settle and register on the stick.
What else, dunno. Check yer anodes and touch up any exposed ali casing with paint, use etch primer first though or it'll peel/flake in no time. Grease prop shaft, I tend to use trailer beraing grease on that cos its knocking about in the garage.
I've probably overlooked a point or two, but I'm sure someone else will chip in.

Pretty much concur with Barry, not difficult, only thing I would say get a good 1/4 inch allan key cos' that's wot they are on the leg and you'll bu99er the bolts up by trying to use a metric 6mm equiv. I also found an impact driver handy specially for drain and fill plugs. Fill and drain have O rings both of which need replacing.

Agree with both !

I used to have two of those on my old boat and found that registring with "Keypart" is very useful, They will send you a part list with all the prices so you have it well in advance of any work or service you need to do like replacing those rubber bits that the boat would sink (maybe) if there was a hole in them.

Its not so much a grease nipple, more of a greaser akin to the ones used on stern glands. Little brass screw cap, take it off fill it with grease and screw it back down tight. I do mine 4 or 5 times a year.
