The old RAF airsea rescue launches with their Merlin engines or just for some personal nostalgia a pair of ASR16S with the screamers engaged

Well, it's hard to beat the sound of a Merlin of course, but also some more modern mills are intriguiing.
Check the turbo whine of these things, frinstance.
Between 0:45 and 1:30, how many times would you think they reached their max rpm...?

This is the only engine you'll ever need to hear; speakers on full, beware naughty words !

At the risk of seeming a real Anorak, there is a CD available of 'Warbirds & fighters' engine sounds...the Merlin - in a Spitfire - has to be top of the list, closely followed by the Pegasus in a Harrier.

At the 1967 IOM TT I was in a crowd at the grandstand just before evening practice when the Honda mechanics were warming up three of their six cylinder racing bikes-two 250's and a 297 for the 350 class. The sound was awesome-18 open megga's and 16,000 rpm. A girl passed out and was taken to the first aid tent. We watched the 250 race from Brandish corner. We could hear Hailwood coming for miles before we could see his helmet flashing by over the hedgerows on the drop to Creg-ne-Ba. Best sounding engine I've ever heard-probably the 18,000 RPM at full speed.
